PTA announcement

"1st Thursdays"Parent to School Connections 7:00 PM October 4 -- Presenting East High's Career Center
All parents, teachers, and other members of the EastHigh community are invited to a monthly program focusing on some aspect of the East Aurora High School educational mission. The program is sponsored and advertised by the East High PTA*.The October meeting will be held in the Career Center--enter door 5 and follow signs.

The center has a growing number of resources to help our students prepare for their life after high school. High school is really only a starting point for the rest of their lives. Later dates are November 1, December 6. In January it will be on the 2nd Thursday due to the winter holiday. Meetings will generally be in the faculty cafeteria or you will be directed from there to another location --as with the October meeting. In addition to a specific topic there will be time for more general discussion on various topics and issues about high school education of our students -- time for sharing between parents, administration, faculty and community members. Bring your questions.

At 6:30 PM on each of the 1st Thursdays there will be a PTA business meeting. Every one is welcome to attend but voting will be restricted to PTA members.

Door 28 - If you are talking about the door by the band and chorus room it is no longer numbered 28. It is now Door 5.

We are not sure how to start this but we want to hear other people's feelings on the horrible way Mrs. Barnes at K.D. Waldo reacted to a tornado. She managed to put every child's life in jeopardy at that school, I for one no longer feel safe knowing she is the one in charge of my child from 8am to 3pm

While we were still under the warning the skies were still black strong winds but the rain slowed down she not only sent the kids home on time (at 3pm we were still under warning) she also made an announcement that all children must leave the building immediately. about 3-5 minutes afterward the rain started coming down so hard I was driving to East to get my son and there were branches falling in front of my car I was concerned if waldo released the students then East probably did too...Luckily they stayed on Lock down til about 3:20-3:30.

A few other problems Waldo is currently having:
The teachers have no Grading Policy with midterms around the corner when they asked the principal about this she said she hasn't developed one yet when we asked what we should tell parents at open house about our grading policy she said "they don't need to know that kind of stuff",

From what I have heard from others with children that where in school the kids where still in the places they where supppose to go during a tornado warning. She should of never let them out of school unless a parent came into the school to get them. I do believe if any of them got hurt because of that they could sue. This was a very bad choice on her part. You need to take this up with the school board. If a group of you are concerned about these things maybe one could come and talk at the board meeting you would have pently of support from some in the crowd.

Supposedly, Marin Gonzalez was in the building at the time and told her what to do. The same thing happened at Cowherd as well..the students were released right when the storm started. Apparently, it was Marin's decision both times. The district needs to have some better emergency plans in place and they need to train all staff on them each year. There were some parents trying to get hold of Dr. Roberts after this and he was non responsive to them. AS for the grading policy, doesn't the board have a set policy that can be printed out for parents and students?

A. Initial Response
1. School personnel are usually first on the scene of an
emergency situation within the school. They will normally take charge and remain in charge of the emergency until it is resolved and will transfer command and incident management to the appropriate emergency responder agency with legal authority to assume responsibility. They will seek guidance and direction from local officials and seek technical assistance from state and federal agencies and industry where appropriate. However, at no time will school officials transfer responsibility for student care.
2. The Principal will be responsible for activating the school emergency operations plan and the initial response which may include:
a. Evacuation – When conditions are safer outside than inside a building. Requires all staff and students to leave the building immediately.
b. Reverse Evacuation – When conditions are safer inside a building than outside. Requires all staff and student to go to safe places in the building from outside the building.
c. Lock down – When a person or situation presents an immediate threat to students and staff in the building. All exterior doors and classroom doors are locked and students and staff stay in their offices, work areas and classrooms.
d. Shelter-in-place – When conditions are safer inside the building than outside. For severe weather sheltering, students and staff are held in the building safe areas and interior rooms or basement away from windows. For hazardous material release outdoors with toxic vapors, students and staff are to remain in their classrooms, windows and doors are sealed and all ventilation systems are shut off. Limited movement is allowed.. Taking shelter inside a sealed building is highly effective in keeping students and staff safe.

I was at East High to pick up my child on the day of the Tornado warning. They kept the kids in the school and in the halls sitting down until the warning was up and came to my car and invited me into the building for safety as I was waiting in my car.

Simmons kept their students in the building as well.
