Can it be avoided? Can it be prevented? Is it in the best interests of our students?

To Math is easy:
I don't see any point to your observations other than nicely pointing out that 129 teachers are overpaid. Are people supposed to be impressed with your advanced degrees? The answer is obviously no. Please keep in mind that you received these degrees in a failing system that has produced the worst educated high school level students in the past 20 years in the US. The good old dumbing down of our kids. So additional degrees from that system???? Can't trust 'em. Take a look at the financials yourself. You have already had a financially certified person from your union look at them. They can show you there is no poop. There was a study done on the financials recently that backs that up.Go ahead and whine about what administrators are paid and remember this. Anyone who applies for admin in this district will want a boatload more than neighboring districts since the district does suck and the big reason that it is in horrible shape is the crybully attitude of the teachers and not the finances. Maybe if you stop demeaning others to make yourselves look better and come up with "reality based" solutions, people will slowly start giving you respect. The mere fact that you have advanced degrees does not and should never be a basis for a conclusion that you are a smart person. All that it shows is that you could sit in a classroom longer than others. It also does not mean that you can teach any better. Everyone who knows anything about the educational system here knows that and the message is being spread faster. So, numbnuts, start accepting the fact that teachers were and are part of the problem in the district along with some insane spending back in the '80a and'90s that really put the district in a nose dive (with all the unions in collusion of course). So, take off the diapers, put on your adult pants and get your hands dirty by working on solutions. And I am not from Ward one either. We have brains in other parts of the district also.

ALL IN said...

WEANASDD-if they don't care about mold and asbestos why would they care about lead? Better be quiet or Hanley will call you a crybully! Remember only 15% took a ridiculous meaningless test that by rights they could opt out of. A test that most districts are opting out of it's so meaningless. Shut up and blow your nose for the millionth time, take your headache pills, and try not to let the vertigo knock you down. Don't get demoralized when your immediate superior(inferior) does an informal on Friday 7th hour and Crespot(despot)gets rid of another fine teacher. Great shooting skills at the assembly by the way. EA ALL IN - ALL IN TROUBLE!!

Not Ward 1 Don't you get it ?
Annette, The Union, Glotzbach, Popp, Truckenbrod, Crespo , let's not forget Hanley all have contempt for the teachers and are throwing out some crap contract saying that's all you are going to get...go scratch .We are called inventory by Glotzbach, crybullies by Hanley these admins are quick and good with intimidation, recrimination and put-downs but try to support their teachers? Except for the few suck-ups they meet with weekly? Forget it.

It a New Day in EA said...

The pattern is so obvious. Every time somebody states facts like "The Math is Easy" did, there are the same basic responses. 1)Annette is doing a great job, she is our hero 2)It's the last 30-40 years of school boards that messed it up and Annette Johnson is our only hope and 3)it's the crybullies/teachers fault. Annette, it must be nice to live in a world where facts just don't matter. Your own dillusions are reality. Annette is not that intelligent, she is simply a bully that imposes her will on others.

Here's reality, East Aurora teachers are not just significantly paid less than West Aurora, they are paid less than West Aurora, Indian Prairie 204, Naperville 203, Batavia, Geneva, St. Charles, Elgin, Chicago, etc. etc. etc. They are, by far, the lowest paid of any urban area in the six county area. Further reality, the teachers and staff are now standing together. Come April there will be 15,000 kids running the streets if the board doesn't wake up and dedicate themselves to the staff and students of District 131. I'm sure you remember, it's what they swore an oath to do. And here's here's some more reality for you, everytime the parents and community join the teachers in protest, more and more leaders are coming forth. The community is waking up and they will have candidates to run against the current board. The board will either support us or they will be replaced.

It is a new day in EA.

Pay to play said...

Many of us have concerns about Ken Darby he quickly joined the board and his son was hired. It was never posted on the personnel report for all to see. Not posting the position shows political pay to play. To many of us it looks like Mr Darby has made a deal with administration. He would sit in the audience before joining the board telling union leadership how it will be different when he is elected. On the surface it looks like he took care of himself and the teachers or students.

As a taxpayer I am glad to see Annette is watching my dollars. It the up to the board to get n the best settlement possible not to pay teachers what other districts are making. That is good being a good steward of the tax dollars.

What I have not agreed with is her push for all day kinder and building a building to house the program. By law we are not forced to educate kids in kinder or preschool. I am also opposed to any new construction at East Aurora.

To teachers why do you not live in 131?

Demand Harding gets fired said...

It is not the fault of the board that we are not paid it is our fault.Yes, staff we have voted yes to being underpaid. In the last contract Harding claimed they did not have the money. We believed him! He quickly joined the administration and then left for a high paying job with our union. We should demand Harding get fired. It is our dues that pay his salary. We have the largest contributions of any district in our local.

Hardings wife is now becoming an administrator. Last week she and Crespo toured the school. He called her his intern. She was present when he targeted staff. She is a witness to discrimination and she is defending him. Harding wife will now become an administrator and collect TRS. Is that fair we are paying her husbands wages to defend us and she is party to targeting of teacher speakers.

It is well known that Hardings mother did the same thing in Yorkville. Like mother like son.

Two of the schools she opened where not mandated by the State. i thought the whole Board made the decisions. If Annette Johnson is making the decisions why do we have a Superintendent isn't that his job? I can't say he's the best but how many people out there that could be Superintendent would want to work here. This has to be the only district in the State that has The Board run it. What has Johnson done about overcrowding in the Schools? We bus the kindergarten students to school but can't get buses for the Middle and High School. Who pays for the busing of the Kindergarten students? If is our taxpayers than if I was a parent of Middle and High School I would be very upset busing can't be offered to those students.

It is not here business to fix 131 it is the whole board and The Superintendent.

I don't see support from Johnson said...

She helped by agreeing to have insurance premiums skyrocket and insult staff by initially offering such a miserable, minimal raise.

Couldn't have said it better said...

You definitely did the math to show how underpaid the rank and file of EA 131 are. And to ask where the remaining 75% of the budget goes is an excellent question (although we all know irresponsible spending is a large part of it).

Good for you standing up for yourself and others. You need to organize and speak before the school board. They are meeting tonight and again two weeks from now. It's the first and third Monday's of the month. They meet at 7:00 pm. Tonight's meeting is at East High in the cafeteria. I look forward to hearing you speak.

http://www.d131.org/PDF/Board/EASD-131-Financing-Education-presentation-2014.pdf

Please read fact as to how the district spends its money. The budget is 180 million.
The district spends 60% of its money on salaries. It clearly shows the purchased services, supplies, capital outlay, debt service (other), and non capital makes up the rest. So bloggers do not create wild stories (other) is debt service and non capital services represent purchases of things like computer, copy machines. District 131 bids everything and that is documented by multiple discussion at board meetings.

Insurance the district absorbed 1.8 million in increased medical claims this year. If administration was as greedy as you claim the employees should pay the additional 1.8 million. Please check cost for insurance ITS GOING UP.

Does anyone think full day kinder programs do not benefit students. Nationally all reports show money should go to early childhood. Does anyone deny that the Magnet program is not a great educational experience for students.

If we want more than fix the formula. D131 and their problems started thirty years ago and whether it is the school board, Dr Popp, or Annette Johnson they have all worked to make it a better place.

If you are that unhappy leave life is to short.

A Whole Lotta Money at Risk in D131 said...

it sound as though the penalties can be huge if a district doesn't administer the PARCC tests as directed by the state. This came from the Illinois State Board of Education.

If any district does not test, ISBE will withhold its Title I funds. We will also seek to recoup the state funds spent on any test booklets unused by the district, as well as any restocking fees charged to ISBE by our testing vendor,” Meeks and Koch wrote.

“ISBE is also prepared to take recognition action . . . against any district that fails to properly administer the PARCC exam to all students. As you are aware, a non-recognized district will lose General State Aid funding,” the officials said.

Dear Grammar/Comment Police- said...

This statement IS grammatically correct! You are WRONG about the new teacher's statement.

"I am attempting to make informed choices and that is the way I teach"

Run it through a grammar checker if you must.

(Though you missed the spelling error below)-

"I have been quite for fear of being bullied not by my building admin but by teachers". "Quiet" should have been used, but the typo is understandable.

Kudos to you, "new teacher", for actually trying to stay informed instead of succumbing to the bullying of others. Many times people get caught up in their own emotions and can't see the "more"s for the "e"s.

They would never admit they couldn't do it. said...

I suppose if the test must be given, those left, who are NOT on strike and/ or non- Union will have to make sure things get done. Hahaha! I'd love to get a peak at that. Maybe a good way for some of those admin. to step back in, or some who have never been in the classroom, to give it a go, and get a sense of classroom realities 101.

Ok... said...

So the keyboard warrior sure has a lot to say here. You claim to be a local resident, but you won't put your name to your own post. Why don't you man up, "numbnuts", and put on your big boy pants. You sure talk a good game, but it doesn't seem like you have the guts to say anything to a teacher's face.

Clean house said...

Crespo was paid moving expenses at Proviso because of a friendship with a administrator at Proviso When State over-site happened at Proviso transactions had been audited and Crespo was told his contract would not renew. The professionals left to review the transactions discovered failures in the vetting process. Crespo was planning on bring over other colleagues from Proviso to fill administrative rolls. With state over-site many are being released. Crespo's moving expenses caused Proviso to look his way first but there are many other questionable characters left at Proviso.

We are sure the new board will address this and not allow this. We can only hope it is true the board will restore trust in administration and clean house in EA. Please

To stop doing the same thing over(Matt)

Well more pithy words were never spoken by our hack reporter with zero credentials walking into an administrative position that he had no credentials for and then getting a 40,000 raise for expertly insulting, demeaning and demoralizing all d131 teachers in advance of contract negotiations- Can't you guys connect the dots? And Matt of course you do not value advanced degrees from prestigious centers of learning, because you have none. I didn't go to university in the last 20 years but graduated summa cum laude and had scholarships for my B.A and M.A from two Ivy League institutions. Doesn't mean I could sit longer, Matt it means I could bust my ass and produce and achieve. My degrees and experience only became meaningless when I started to work at d131 and little by little had you chimps try to belittle and downgrade my achievements since you had none of your own. And that's the fact Jack!

Ivy Little League said...

So you have two Ivy League degrees and you aren't smart enough to get out of 131? Hmmm.....

Question.... said...

Where can you get really really good fried chicken around here?? I mean really good

Wounded Warrior said...

To: Little League (you certainly are)More like Bush League

I never wanted "out" of d131-Didn't say you chimps were SUCCESSFULL in your attacks on me. I just knew you were so jealous of my background and talents that none of you hacks would ever throw me a bone. That's okay, thank god I have plenty of professional connections, awards and distinctions in the outside world at-large. Wasn't in it for the money but that doesn't mean I want to be completely ripped off. I have been through many battles and come out a warrior albeit wounded. How insulting that you work for this district yet put it down-- I would like nothing better than to be respected for the important work I do, and to be compensated for that work. Don't need any advanced degrees to understand that concept.

Creepo Crespo said...

Crespo is going around taking photos of people on their breaks with his phone. Yep, comes around 2 or three times until he gets his "shot". Trying to impress Truckenbrod woth your stealthy skills, lol? Why don't you go to secret "spy" school because you certainly are not principal material. The first time you made a lewd comment about a student you should have been gone! One can only imagine what is on yout phone and computer!

Reply to stay informed: you are way off said...

To Stay Informed/ I am a new teacher with the latest teaching skills: what exactly is that supposed to mean? Teachers that have years of experience do not have current teaching skills? It is just amazing to me the mentality that some new teachers have. I hope that you are not of the mindset that teachers with years of experience and continuing education, not to mention double masters/ PhD. Levels are somehow not as qualified or skilled. Second, you have no idea about what being informed constitutes. The new contract is leap years away from being good. For example, our health insurance is horrible now. A prescription that recently cost $25.00 a co-pay just yesterday cost me $50.00. In addition, we pay for our TRS. This is 9.40 percent taken from our salary. Likewise, we are significantly below neighboring districts simply based on our salaries alone. I hope that you will take what has been expressed here and really reflect because in all honesty you are horribly misinformed and need to have more respect regarding those with several years of experience. I really would not tout being a first year teacher with current teaching skills as anything more than a really inexperienced teacher. However well meaning you may be as a first year teacher you have miles and miles of experience yet to achieve and this shows greatly. You simply don't know, what you don't know. The new contract is terrible!

Amazed, but then again said...

To the arrogant useless elitist teacher with "experience"

It is no wonder the district is in the shape it's in. Just a tad afraid that your skills have not kept up with newer methods being presented, are we?? Wow. Talk about not being inclusive and just wanting to dictate how things are going to run. Can't get any closer to a dictatorial setting with the teachers now can we. Amazing.
You cannot see the real truth here. It is not that district 131 employees are underpaid. All the other districts' employees are overpaid. With your years of "experience" and advanced degrees and you cannot see the actual issue. Tsk. Tsk.

Disgusted said...

To double masters/PhD

Now we know why people are calling the teachers crybullies. This is how you interact with the admin also. Just bullying people around if they don't think your way.

Now we also know why the teachers are not respected. Look at how they talk to their own young. Nice and inviting isn't it.

Taypayer12 said...

You state the other districts are overpaid how do you come up with that idea. Most districts and community members don't argue over this. Naperville residents don't cry over the money they pay in taxes they want their children to have a good education
and are willing to pay for it. Ever since Common Core has come out almost all districts in the State are having the test scores drop.

This district has good teachers and yes some bad but with the attitude on here and you can tell it is Administration and some board members how do you think the feel. Our district is cheap but are willing to pay for bad Administration.

Crespo loves his camera... said...

From the Forest Review paper...
"The other time, the girls were having practice and [Athletic Director] Anthony Crespo was the only one supervising them. Just him, a male, no adult females. And he had his camera phone out. There were young ladies practicing in just sports bras. When some of us called him on that, he said, 'Well, there are cameras everywhere in the school.' That's not good enough. If you're going to discipline teachers for misbehaving, then he needs to be disciplined, too"

Hello disgusted said...

Dear disgusted, what is disgusting is the remarks made by a new teacher touting that they have the newest/ most current teaching skills/ credentials or something to that effect simply because they are a new teacher. What I did was educate both of you and the new teacher in that experienced teachers with years of service also have the newest/ skills/ methodologies/ researched based education as well. This was further explained that teachers like myself not only have years of experience, but are current in curricula, as I along with many have continued our education credentials with masters, masters, PhD's national board certification and at the present completing a third masters in ESL. There you go, now that is really all of it. I don't know why my differing view would be upsetting to you. Anyway, thanks for sharing. :)

Calling said...

Dear Amazed:

Matt- You really are threatened by professionals with a calling who are making a difference in the lives of children. We care, we clothe, we feed, we educate,- when we can find the time to lesson plan without the meaningless bullshit paperwork and endless PARCC/Access tests you pump our way daily. And what do you do? Wipe the lipstick off Popp's ass ever night and ruin the lives of teachers and the students who love them because your maggoty job gave you a big fat undeserved raise. I do not know how you and the rest of them sleep at night. Your big contribution to humankind is to prevent hardworking professionals from getting their due. You really made momma proud!!
