t was a joke that Thruckenbrod introduced a new principal May 11 when Mr. Byrd is still under contract. Classless. It was quite obvious that the new principal will be nothing but a mouthpiece for current administration. Thruckenbrod said" I have been trying to get this guy to come with me for 8 years. He was so scared he had to read off yellow legal pad to communicate the most simple introductions to us. Fed most of his lines such as "I am here for the teachers", we sat in dumbfound silence. Here's what new Mr. Principal : GET A DRESS CODE AND ZERO TOLORANCE FOR CELL PHONES AND START SUSPENDING KIDS FOR THEIR EGREGIOUS BEHAVIOR!!! Maybe then scores might go up because these kids will finally get that they are not in charge of the store!
That is not your role as a board member. What the hell? This is why the district will never improve. Encourage relationship building and solutions versus undermining the administration! Good Lord!
Hey Matt, instead of writing under the name here we go again, I suggest you actually do something for the children of EA. Stealing a $40,000 plus benefits salary, requiring another person help do nothing ( Matt needs another secretary) and BTW what is you do, nothing all day shows the level of changes I hope this BOE makes.
Also, good riddance to the old corrupt BOE. however we still have three leftovers let's see if they are productive in dealing with cleanup. Get the BROOM OUT.
Alex you are starting off on the wrong foot you as a Board Member can't change things and the proper way for things to get done is going through the chain of command. In fact if an employee want to do a lawsuit against the district going to you first wouldn't help.
By the way Johnson might of pressed to keep the Magnet School but she didn't start it. By the way how are the students doing and why aren't the grades posted separately as a school so we can see the grades?
Same goes for the Kindergarten which isn't mandated for children how has that helped the district? Are schools are in terrible shape and nothing is done to help reduce class sizes.
I have to admit I would hate to be a teacher her trying to teach Students in overcrowded classrooms with some not wanting to learn.
This new hire is a joke can this district only hire people with a past or their friends?

Really, I hope the newly elected Board of Education does undermine the administration. I have worked for 131 for ten years and have a MS degree. I have paid for my education and TRS. I earn $51,000.
Mr Hanleys raise was $46,000 with TRS. Tell me why we should support the administration? 😡
To Lost priorities May 4; 10:18am.I was just reading through the comments posted here and noticed your mention of getting rid of the PR position and have the supt. speak on behalf of the district. Before Mr. Muhammad, there was no position as it has grown to be. There was one young lady who wrote brief notes for the paper while sitting in the audience at board meetings. She gave press releases to the Beacon and no one knew she existed. When the Board and superintendent needed someone to sugar coat all their failings, they hired an excellent writer and master of positive adjectives. By time Roberts came up to the job, he needed Clayton to gloss over his failings and ineffectiveness and bumped him up to being a director with a pay increase and assistant.
I believe if we had more transparency, people who knew their job and had the skills to do it and honestly did it at the administrative level, there would be less need for the community relations postition. The position could probably be made minimal if parents and families were involved with their children and their schools and promoting what our schools have to offer. Then local business and clubs would be more in tune through the families and be willing to donate and support D131. Blame or credit can be spread all around. But, There is a saying "a fish rots fom the head" which means problems start with the leadership and trickle down. Down into the district personnel and school community. The Board needs to hire someone who leads. Once we have someone who actually has a vision for our district and can delegate others in helping to accomplish that goal for success, we won't need a PR person creating a positive image, our district will shine on its own.
I think our district office has become infected with a group of these people. http://www.newyorker.com/humor/borowitz-report/scientists-earth-endangered-by-new-strain-of-fact-resistant-humans
Congradulations to Liska for growing the Band that they will need another Band Director. It shows who was better. Let's see if the Board now supports another band room. that is what Darby promised so lets him deliver. Great step though getting another Band Director
A second band director? I agree that's a good idea, since band enrollment has in fact increased considerably. But you are WRONG when you say "it shows who's better". Quoting Mr. Mills from February 2014:
"The band program on average has been growing by 15 to 20 students per year so next year we are looking at 175 to 185 students"
I don't know exactly how many students are enrolled in band at EAHS this year, but using Mr. Mills' mid-point estimate of 180, I did the math:
In 2005 there were 120 students in band, out of 2534. That works out to 4.73%. In January of 2015 the EAHS enrollment was 3749, with an estimate of 180 band students. That's 4.80%, which is a difference of only 7 hundredths of a percent! That's hardly significant (basically a tie).
And where are the band students coming from? Basically, five sources:
--Waldo Middle School --Simmons Middle School --Cowherd Middle School --Magnet School --Somewhere else (homeschooled, parochial schools, transferring from outside the district)
More than 50% of the students who recently auditioned into the two most advanced bands at EAHS attended Simmons Middle School. That means that more top band students polished their musical skills at Simmons than all other sources COMBINED.
Our district's band program is growing (in size and quality) because of many factors: the directors (grade school, middle school, and high school), the hard work of the students themselves, and support from parents and administration.
So Mr. Mills (Band Boosters president) was wrong??
And if there are indeed 200 kids in the band this year, where did they come from? Band students do not simply show up in high school and sign up for band as beginners...they have all had significant training from 5th through 8th grade. The high school director simply builds upon the foundation provided by grade school and middle school instruction. And in the case of the two most-advanced bands at EAHS, more than HALF of the students who auditioned into those bands attended Simmons Middle School. That means that more Simmons students auditioned into the top bands than all other sources (Waldo, Cowherd, Magnet, parochial schools, home school, or transfer) COMBINED.
You can say that Mr. Liska is a good band director, and I would probably agree. But to claim that he is better than others in our district is just plain untrue; the numbers tell the REAL story.
Mr. Mills isn't the band booster president. He hasn't been all year. He was last school year. Mr Darby was president this school year and Mr. Hook wad voted president for next school year.

Anonymous 2 is skewing the truth. Mr. Truckenbrod said 4 or 5 years not 8.
That is how these stupid blog lies get started.
Thruckenbrod lied, he only became an admin in 2013. That is 2 years. Up until then he was a PE teacher in Florida.
It is time we send the admins packing. I bet they did not check his references. Admins at Proviso said his contract was not going to be renewed.
