District 131 in the larger community

As we prepare for a new school year, it's good to remind ourselves that our district is part of a city, county, state, and country. Like a ripple in a pond, our students' and staff's decisions and behavior can have a wide-ranging effect. Just something to think about...

  1. Saw this in the minutes of the June 18th School Board meeting:

Heidi Brooker of 14 Briar Gate, Sugar Grove, addressed the board. Mrs. Brooker provided a packet of information to each board member. She stated in her comments that she was terminated based on an evaluation by the building principal at Bardwell. Mrs. Brooker shared test results from her students which were positive and this was not reflected on her evaluation. Mrs. Brooker further stated that she felt that her dismissal was a personal vendetta that the principal had with her. Mrs. Brooker was at Bardwell for four years and has gotten to know the families and has a nice relationship with many. She urged the board of education to look into this situation and asked that they speak to unions, staff and coordinators. She further stated that

Does one person (the principal) really have the power to deprive our Bardwell students of an excellent teacher? If so, this is unfortunate and NOT in our kids' best interests!

  3. They eliminated Secondary Director in lieu of Beatrice's new position. Diana who?

    ReplyDelete
  4. Looks like Marin Gonzalez will be a Spanish teacher at East High this year.

    ReplyDelete
  5. On the last thread someone posted:

"@8:21PM thanks for the article...very interesting.
Director of Secondary Programs, isn't that what Marin did as an assistant superintendent? I think it's odd to have a director of secondary programs and an assistsnt superintendent of elementary programs. Shouldn't those two positions be at the same level?
What will happen with the bilingual program if Beatrice is not there to make sure all the changes she made are implemented with fidelity? I haven't seen a posting for a bilingual director. Are they just planning on leaving the assistant director or promoting her? If that is the case, we can count on all the progress Beatrice made with the program to down the drain. Diana is not well liked among teachers, this will surely impact how the new changes are implemented. Hopefully, Diana will work on her people skills before the school year starts and will stop treating teachers and adults like children. July 17, 2012 10:10 PM"

I believe they are referring to the current assistant director for bilingual her name is Diane Argueta. I'm guessing that not many people outside of central office and bilingual teachers know who she is. It's a shame that she has only been in that position for one year and she has already earned herself a bad reputation. But knowing that D131 loves to promote bad administrators, she will probably replace Beatrice as director of bilingual.

  6. Rumor is the Board rehired Hedi that is a step in the right direction. I have personally experienced Anna Groh and she is very unprofessional. It seems like we have found our voice and people are listening 33Bardwell teachers signed a petition for Hedi and administration looked the other way. If the Romero mill is correct she went to O Donnell which is a well run building

  7. Something big went down in maintenace sounds like Nestor and Scott got sent home I am sure it's because of the investigation going on. Anyone know.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Rumor has it that Ms. Johnson bullied her way into getting her friend hired as the secretary in the athletic department. Mr. Leadbetter needs to be very very careful!

    ReplyDelete
  9. Hopefully they will do something about Cam and Nestor they should have been fired months ago. The Board should not spend money on the sports program the scores are at the bottom 5%. All kind of money was spent this summer like the $12,000 they just gave Triple Treat and it is a waste.

    ReplyDelete
  10. The District is full of patronage. FOIA who works the Summer Jobs that is another can of worms. But the Board wont do that some of their kids, friends and relatives work their right along with the other district employees.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Sounds like Cam has something to hide just like the the building and grounds did.

  13. East aurora rejects a bid from ADS, a company that Johnson says offers superior service for $200 more on a contract over $60000. This company is in East Aurora and has bent over backwards for E A in the past. Johnson says "we are counting beans, that's what we are about".So why didn't we take the lowest busing bid? Till Johnson is gone E A will keep making senseless decisions.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Interesting article about the Fire alarm system. The BOE should take the lowest bidder. Interesting comment that now Johnson says she is enforcing policy is that not their job. They need to start enforcing the district credit cards also. Lavish trips to New Orleans, SanDiego, Orlando to name a few. What is the issue they should always take the lowest bidder but they need to work on the credit cards as well.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Today's ADS article is funny this is the same company who donated a large screen TV and Video games for the District to run prizes on the I voted campaign.to pass the referendum. Then I read they are only paying $60,000 per year in taxes for all the properties they own.

Some reputation they get low taxes and pay for votes.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Are you trying to say they get a break on taxes because of donations? I don't see anything where if you give donations you get breaks on your property taxes. I believe this business has been very good to the district you should bite the hand that helps you.

I wonder how many retreats the administrators went on this summer to golf clubs and I bet they did take some trips for conferences.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Who cares about supporting the local business community? Who cares about customer complaints? Not our School Board president; she only cares about "POLICY"--

    beaconnews.suntimes.com/13830898-417/east-aurora-rejects-local-alarm-contract-for-cheaper-alternative.html

    ReplyDelete
  18. With the bus contract the board stated they didn't have to go with the lowest contract and that RichLee had to many complaints and I guess at that time money wasn't a problem how much more was the contract they took more than RichLee?

Now they have contracts that are only $200. apart and the one that has complaints is the one they are accepting. It doesn't matter about the BBB they only listen to complaints they really don't endorse the companies.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Both ADS and Fox Valley Fire have A plus rating from the BBB so what is the problem the bidding system says you need to take the lowest bidder and they did unless something was wrong with the company. ADS has two open lawsuits Fox Valley none it seems after all the blogs complaining they are not allowing business as usual. It appears Nestor and Scott got caught and they don't like it. I hope the BOE investigates credit cards next.

    ReplyDelete
  20. The BOE should of had a policy in place for the credit cards since 2011 and had a committee with independent people looking at the charges. Also they should of had a policy that anyone who had a credit card know the rules and signed something that they knew the charges that where acceptable. The Board has really not looked at those charges on the credit cards and remember they where at the Title One Conference in 2010 when they went out to dinner for for Wells and members have adult drinks that the district paid for which is against IL School Code and had the administrators spouses stay at the hotels with them and they where to pay for their stay. Also did each board member that came without someone have their own room and since the meetings stopped at 6:30 shouldn't they been able to drive home and come back the next day or did they want to stay for the parade that Chicago has for their family's enjoyment.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Central Office news is Jerome Roberts step son was in moving boxes and desks around yesterday. Not only do we pay for his health insurance even though he has a father and is not from a single family one parent home but now we take jobs away from East Aurora residents and alumni who are ecomonically challenged. His name is Brandon Gies.
That's not to mention the other plus 100 family members given key summer jobs. The board needs to look into this

As for Nestor everyone knows he is in the soccer business in the Hispanic community. Alarm Detections is a sponsor . If the company Fox Valley had the lowest bid they should get it. Nestor has just got caught and should be fired for making up stories to protect Alarm. It does look like each company had a A Plus. He should be allowed to spread lies Fox Valley employees people as well.

Many of us are the silent majority and have looked for justice for years. The productivity of Central Office is horrible because it is a group that rewards people who don't work. You don't feel like working because they don't.

I hope the Board continues to work on cleaning things up. They need to work on credit cards also. MANY OF US ARE WATCHING.

Ms Johnson a few on this blog are critical of you many know. We also know you are willing to put yourself out there. That is not easy.

PLEASE look into the summer help and misuse of District Credit Cards.

    ReplyDelete
  22. You give Johnson too much credit from what I heard she was the one that ok'd that dinner bill from the conference in 2010.

Remember a board president can't do things on her own it takes all the board members and they should enforce the credit cards policy but they don't have one. This district spends way too much on food and retreats. Johnson is at Central Office just about every day so she should know Roberts son is working there and she doesn't care because when she looks the other way Roberts doesn't say anything when she steps out of bounds in her role as a board member.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Last year they had no dinners charged stop going back years also there is no retreat this year. We should then talk about trips to Florida and SanDiego that Juanita Wells ans Carol Farnum had and they did nothing

    ReplyDelete
  24. All these people do is go back years and years while saying we should learn from the mistakes yet they refuse to acknowledge real progress.

  25. If a school board has obtained and issued credit cards or procurement cards for the use of board members, the superintendent, or other district employees or officials to pay certain job-related expenses or to make purchases on behalf of the board or district or any student activity funds, or for purposes that would otherwise be addressed through a conventional revolving fund, then the board shall adopt a written credit card policy that at least:
    1) identifies the allowable types of purchases;
    2) provides for the issuing bank to block the cards’ use at unapproved merchants;
    3) limits the amount a card-holder can charge in a single purchase or within a given month;
    4) provides specific guidelines on purchases via telephone, fax, and the Internet;
    5) indicates the consequences for unauthorized purchases;
    6) requires card-holders to sign a statement affirming that they are familiar with the board’s credit card policy;
    7) requires review and approval of purchases by someone other than the card-holder or user;
    8) requires submission of original receipts to document purchases;

  31. I'm impressed with this statement I hope the district stands behind him in this.

“My first rule to the students is to keep their grades up because they can’t get into college without the academics,” said Hernandez who plans to establish study groups and tutoring opportunities that will focus on academic success first.

    ReplyDelete
  32. What do you guys think of the 8 East Aurora students studying abroad? That's amazing in my opinion. They beat West Aurora this year. West usually sends more students abroad.

    ReplyDelete
  33. It was never in any media statement or showcased in any district communication, but Coach Tamberelli (former EA football coach)had a study period for his team members prior to practice. He held a special meeting for students and parents to learn about college options. Not to mention the 'family' he built amongst his players. Apparently, winning scores were the only thing required of the coach. Without the wins, D131 makes you an ex-coach.

Sportsmanship, commitment to your team, respect....these things are ALL very important. And YES, it is a wonderful thing to see a coach make academics a priority!

  34. As a East taxpayer I fully support the Board of Education and their decision to go with the lower bidder. Good Job!!!

    ReplyDelete
  35. That is awesome. When my daughter went to Thailand in 2007-8, not only was she the only one to go that year, it'd been a very long time since anyone else had gone from east.

  37. A very positive article, about a worthy cause. I also like the way Boys II Men is described as a "mentoring club".

    ReplyDelete
  38. I see there is a lot of concern over building and grounds recently. The biggest waste of money is not trips to Menards. The board needs to look at how job contracts have been bid. In short, Scott calls in buddies of his and gets them to bid the jobs. Some of the bids I've seen are way over priced. I've also seen when some of these friends of Scott's do shoddy work and Scott then attempts to cover for them. I've been very frustrated at times wondering who Scott represents, the District or his buddies.

I believe Scott is supposed to retire after this year. It won't be soon enough. The board needs to figure out how to make job bidding more open and transparent. We have lost enormous amounts of money with these good old boy deals.

    ReplyDelete
  39. All bids are seen by the finance committee and Johnson sits on it so yes the board does see them and they approve paying the bill.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Yes but the bidding is not open to all companies, just the ones that Scott calls and says bid this job. In short, if you aren't friends with Scott, you never even know There is a job for bidding.

    ReplyDelete
  41. The board approves big construction projects. There is big money going out the door with Scott he takes a Electric bid and breaks it into three parts so the board never gets it. Look at Platt Electric they can get $60,000 in work because they will do $20,000 at a time.

  42. Teachers

We at Bardwell recently addressed the BOE. Please be aware they have been a Board of action and we should give them credit.

Recently they returned a teacher who suffered retaliation to the classroom after her review showed lies and misinformation.

They also handled her wild statements children could not attend school because of book fees. Everyone is allowed a education she had parents in tears and strong-armed the staff into calling parents.

If teachers have the facts and present in a format that the BOE can use action will happen.

Thank-you for all the time you spend for the children.

    ReplyDelete
  43. As long as the board sits back and does nothing as Wilson Morales keeps his job after beating up a child, I can never support them.

They should have terminated Wilson and anyone who helped cover up his egregious actions.

    ReplyDelete
  44. It is good that the Board acted on these things but the first person anyone should talk to is the Superintendent that is his job.

    ReplyDelete
  45. What disciplinary action was taken against the administrator who wrote the lies and misinformation on the evaluation? I'm glad this teacher was reinstated but the problem is that nothing happens to administration. If an administrator writes false statements on a teacher's evaluation he/she SHOULD BE FIRED!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  46. The admin suspended was Anna Groh we at Bardwell did work with Dr Roberts and Aird all year nothing happened

The Teacher was still evaluated on personal emotions not professional. She did speak in front of the Board and got action. Student data was given

Last week she demanded we not allow kids to register fr school. She started this campaign in May. Everyone could not believe she was still saying kids can not walk in the school unless fees are paid. For the most part the parents try hard. We even suggested other methods of community service to help collect past due book money. She would not give in.

It is illegal not to allow a child the right to goto school. Does she not also think it will cost the school more money unless she thinks a book cost more than State aid

The Board settled problems quickly. We had not seen that much action all year. We do not say thank you to them enough.

    Thank
    The Teachers of Bardwell

    ReplyDelete
  47. Amen 6:23 pm! When will the senseless defense and protection of these corrupt administrators, finally come to an end in this district?

    ReplyDelete
  48. Again that was good they took charge but The Superintendent should be handling these things by the IL School Code. Why pay a Superintendent if the board does his job. It looks like they need to look at some of the administrators also since if what you said it true about last fees they have not had enough training on the law.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I agree Wilson needs to go...he's a bully and has no skills ...what are you waiting for EA ...fire him!

    ReplyDelete
  50. I heard there was a meeting with admin about credit cards does anyone know is that true? If so what's going to happen? If they found something that something that warrants a meeting then Where's the follow through? Was it rampant abuse or just. A few? I hope the board is asking questions and taking names to hand out punishments
Bravo to the board for helping the Bardwell teachers a little at least what about the Johnson principal ? When are they gonna deal with that bully?

    ReplyDelete
  51. Central Office news is the administrators lost the use of credit cards. Not sure why but a day before a email requesting that Madam President wanted to see all receipts. By 8pm that evening Lisa emailed all Principals for a emergency meeting.

    ReplyDelete
  52. According to the IL Administration Code the board was suppose to have a policy written since 2010 about the use of credit cards and what was acceptable and what wasn't. There was suppose to be a committee that looked over these charges every time the bill came in and they where suppose to have the original receipt. I can tell you that some times they don't. Almost all have misused the district and taxpayers money and I hope the State finds out and takes care of it because they will make sure that money is paid back and those who misused the cards (which is about all who have them) will be punished. Madam President misused the cards also.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Augustine should be fired why isn't he?

Many of the administrators are upset they did send original receipts in to Penny. Now thy are gone. Why? They all need to be punished. If the receipts get turned in all involved should be turned into the States Attorney.

Also the Board needs to look at expense accounts they are cheating on mileage.

    ReplyDelete
  54. The Board does not have credit cards but they should review what people are up too.

    ReplyDelete
  55. No the board doesn't have credit cards and as of now none of them give there receipts to anyone they keep them if they have them.

The board should know that if anyone from the district goes anywhere if they bring a spouse or their other half that person is suppose to pay there way and that includes hotel stays even if they get a single room. The board goes on the trips to The Title One Conference every year and while the Conference give complementary tickets to spouses and whom ever someone they might bring it does not mean that person gets a free night stay with the administration at the hotel.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Go East Board. There is so much that needs to be cleaned up in the East Aurora School District and you are making a difference. Thank You!!!

    ReplyDelete
  57. Too bad they're going about it all wrong. Their job is to oversee Roberts, not to directly handle things. They are not educators and are over stepping their boundaries. If the district is run poorly then they need to replace Roberts. period.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Yes the administrators did loss there cards and the Board is stopping them from travel and meals outside of the district how long has that taken.

Mileage is another that secretaries and adminis are adding extras to the Bard needs to look at that as well.

Johnson should have done this awhile back I am sure she doesnt run her business like that.

This blog has been saying it for years. Yes it is a new day in 131 and I guess many of the small fries in the district has had to look at this for years. So I say better late than never!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  59. I think 131 school board should take preventative measures and initiate before they violate.

    http://montgomery.patch.com/articles/district-school-board-hears-report-on-open-meetings-act-violation

    ReplyDelete
  60. The Superintendent needs to make these administrators and others that have credit cards pay back the money to the district that was misused. Also why do they have to stay in a hotel in Chicago for two nights in November when most of the activities end around 5pm.

    ReplyDelete
  61. The Board should of back in 2010 when the new rule was made in IL Administration Code about credit cards made a policy about the use of them and had everyone who had a card sign a statement saying they had read it. The rule has guide lines they have to follow by law and a district can tighten the rules up if they want to. As of this date the board doesn't have a policy on this. Also this board was suppose to pick someone who didn't have a card to look at the statements every month. There are a few districts out there that respect their community and have someone from the district and a community member look at them. Also most district show the statements on the list of bills not ours. In fact at the first of the year the statement was under The Board of Education in the list of bills now it is under something else.

Also in the Administration Code they talk about petty cash funds and no where does it state that meeting snacks where to be used for that.

The board makes policy and the superintendent is suppose to enforce it.

    ReplyDelete
  62. If you know the law maybe you should be on the Board instead of complaining I am happy with the progress they have made.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I work in another district, and have a card (we call it a p-card, as in purchasing card). When the statement comes in each month, I have to fill out a form saying what each expense is for, and attach the itemized receipt for each expense and submit that report & receipts to my supervisor. He then goes over the statement, questioning me if there's anything he's not sure about, then forwards it on to the business office. There's a specific individual there who then reviews the charges, receipts, and everyone's report again, and questions anything she is unsure of. I have a monthly limit I can charge, and since it's really a debit card, if a vendor tries to run it and it goes beyond my limit the transaction is disallowed. When I got the card I had to read the school policy on proper use, and signed that I understood and promised to follow it. One of the things in the policy was that I was subject to disciplinary action, including termination, if I violated the policy.

When properly supervised, p-cards actually save the school a significant amount of money and time. In the past, everything we bought was by Purchase Order. We'd fill out (by hand) a paper requisition (which of course was in multiple copies so these forms cost $), submit it to our supervisor who'd review it and send it to the business office. Then someone in the business office would type up a Purchase Order (again a multi-copy form) from the requisition and send it back to my supervisor for approval. Sometimes the PO would have to be retyped because of poor handwriting on the requisition, or just plain old typos. Besides the cost of the forms, staff time on every transaction, etc., there was no way to get better prices by buying over the internet or acting quickly to get sales prices. Just one example: we bought an ice machine years ago under the old system. A couple of years ago we bought a new ice machine under the new system, using my p-card on an internet site. We paid $1000 LESS for a bigger and better machine (and paid no shipping).

    ReplyDelete
  64. You may look for a better price our people just spent well at least the chosen few. Heard the Board busted Deanne Adams and her Secretary today go BOE

    ReplyDelete
  65. Things should be easier to track using Purchase Orders is the downfall to "p cards". No PO generated, less easy tracking.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Did you read what I described? Every purchase has a paper trail which is viewed and approved by at least 2 people other than the purchaser. Purchases are being tracked just as well as with the old PO system, and not only easier but cheaper. The PO's better only if the p-cards aren't used and reviewed properly. But then, POs aren't any better if THEY aren't used and reviewed properly. To repeat myself, in my district purchases are scrutinized as well or better than they were w/ POs, AND it's costing the district less money. Since when is it a bad thing for a district to reduce administrative costs while maintaining or improving fiscal accountability?

    ReplyDelete
  67. The BOE needs to figure out that Denean doesn't know a thing. She has no business being in charge of curriculum. She relies on other people for knowledge, but then treats them like crap. She'll be nice to your face and then backstab you. She never answers emails and has given other people directives not to either. She needs to go. If the BOE thinks she's the reason test scores have gone up, they are poorly informed.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Why does this district employ a Superintendent when the board does his job?

    ReplyDelete
  69. The Secretaries here at ASC are fed up that Charity Singh is allowed to go do her grocery shopping on District time and bill the District for mileage. Last week she received a check for $918 for mileage. She always has Deanne Adams district credit card. All the Asst sups are upset that they do Deanne's job but Deanne and Charity are protected.

  72. Hey 1:53 Other than Scott Sweigart name a white administrator who has been disciplined or lost their job.

    ReplyDelete
  73. It is going to cost Oswego some money for that and the board hasn't accepted what The States Attorney proposed. He also made this statement.
“I think the thing that impressed (Weis) the most was the self reporting. That isn’t something that is normally done,” Ottosen said of Walsh bringing the issue to the state’s attorney. “He did not want to pursue this further, but because of the previous violations he felt compelled to do so.”

Do you think this board would go to the States Attorney and say they did something wrong I bet not.

Here is the link to the article if you haven't read it.

  74. The Montgomery Patch had a better article about this and here are some of the things they have to do.

Ottosen said Weis is recommending the following corrective actions:

Someone must be present at all board meetings who knows how to operate the recording device.
All board members must read the Open Meetings Act and sign a form attesting to that.
All board members must take an annual training provided by the Illinois Attorney General’s office. The board’s attorney must also provide an annual training approved by Weis.
Weis also recommends that an attorney be present at all board meetings, Otteson said.

As our board taken the annual training class?

  77. I agree with the statement about Roberts. Why does the board continue to support him? He is the worst super. East has had in a long time. He does not do a thing and the board is overstepping and doing his job. Why do they not just pay him off and fire him?

Then he started looking at he bills got Johnson involved and now all the accounting problems came out. Maintenance had to receipts and the expense accounts had all kinds of personal spending. Funny if Johnson would have listened to this blog years ago this could have been cleaned up. Why did the secretary take the blame when it was Adams who screwed up.

    beaconnews.suntimes.com/news/13967179-418/unpaid-school-fees-districts-can-go-after-state-income-tax.html

    ReplyDelete
  83. Since the maintenance workers don't have credit cards how where they able to make these purchases. The districts doesn't use PO's at businesses so I think someone is pulling someones leg. Jay or someone in the finance department should be looking at all the bills coming in and a board member sits on the finance committee why haven't they noticed these things.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Someone needs to look into Leadbetter. The sports programs are filled with coaches charging camp fees and lining their pockets while the district provides the use of equipment and facilities. None of this money goes back to d131. Nestor has received favors for years from the soccer and wrestling organization with his control over rentals.

    ReplyDelete
  85. If in fact these things are going on then this district has a piss poor board. There should be someone watching these things rental of district property or charging of fees. I do not believe Leadbetter is charging fees because if he was someone would start up a fund to get money since most of our students can't afford things like that.

    ReplyDelete
  86. They had a open account at Menards. Rumor is they went to Menards about 1200 times per year. Shows why the buildings are in disrepair and they hire so many of their friends from the outside to do their jobs. If the maintenance workers actually worked the plumbers, electricians, and construction companies would go out of business.

Sorry to say Scott cant retire soon enough.

The Board should not be reviewing every invoice that is why we employ Roberts. With all this waste why are they keeping him

    ReplyDelete
  90. If they are going to Mernards so many times a year why didn't someone pick up on that. The board should have a policy about who can go to Mernards and how much they can spend they will do that. If the people in charge where watching these things which by the IL School Code they should be that wouldn't happen. This board should turn themselves into the States Attorney. If this kind of spending is going on the only people to blame is the superintendent, board and the finance person that is their job to watch these things. The administrators have misused more than 20,000. The board should retire soon while they try to get the district in shape they don't watch where the money is going and if workers are misusing money they should know because they are suppose to have someone looking into the bills. In fact when the Mernards charges where on the list of bills that was the first time they have been on there how do we know someone wasn't working on the superintendents home or someone on the board.

    ReplyDelete
  91. The Menards problem along with the credit cards has been going on for years bills get lumped on the list of bills and unless someone pulls individual invoices they will not be discovered. Be happy someone stopped it when they did. The board should not have to look at individual invoices. To bad the Superintenent does not do his job. Funny the Superintenent did get a new pool at his home.

    http://beaconnews.suntimes.com/news/14298715-460/top-paid-teachers-blue-collar-suburbs-offer-blue-chip-pay.html

It's amazing, school districts less than 20 miles away in blue collar communities similar to Aurora are paying their top teachers $50,000 more a year than District 131 pays it's top teachers.

Is it any wonder why this district doesn't attract and keep top candidates to teach here? In East Aurora, they pay the teachers crap and want them to work longer hours for that meager salary.

  98. Well, those here who said Leadbetter had better be careful were right. He was fired today. I hope he gets a lawyer and sues the heck out of the district! They are targeting the wrong people here. Look up a bit higher on the food chain.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Leadbetter did not deserve to be fired. He has worked his butt off for the athletic program.

Annette Johnson is a bully and she should not be re-elected. Her strong suite is making macaroni, not running a school district.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Cheating, stealing hours, buying personal items, bid rigging are all felonies the Board should sue them. All the free meals are the same way and I am happy tax payer. Don't give the credit to Madam President it is Leonard Congradulations too him. I wonder why Johnson did nothing I am sure she does not run her business that way!!!

    ReplyDelete
  101. Was Mr. Leadbetter fired, or was he reassigned?

Big difference! If he was merely moved to another position in the district (maybe because he refused to kiss certain people's behinds), he would have no legal recourse and the union wouldn't back him up.

But if he was indeed fired (ala Mr. Green), he could & should bring in the legal heavy artillery.

    ReplyDelete
  102. It is funny that the board can let administrators mis use money and not fire them. Everyone of those administrators need to be fired or reprimanded. If this has been going on for awhile why hasn't the finance committee seen it aren't they the ones that are suppose to be looking at the bills and questioning them. Are the ones that use the cards or PO's suppose to turn the receipts in and state what they where used for? If Leonard really wants to clean up he should do an audit of the credit cards for the past 5 years.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Ledbetter is lucky they don't criminally go after him this is not his first brush with the law.

    ReplyDelete
  104. It looks like Mr Leadbetter had financial problems like many, a house getting Foreclosed on in Feb, his wife leaving him for finance problems and working to many hours it may have forced him into what he did. The need for money sometimes make people do crazy things.

Roberts should have helped him out and let him teach but then people in the district would have said a administrator can do anything and get by with it. What he did was wrong it is a no win situation and he needs to move on.

At this point we should all just pray for him.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Why fire him now before school starts? Oh yeah
because johnson and hull has been after him for a year.

Last year he allowed a student to have a affair and move in with the trainerand father her child . The Basketball program is a joke and only survived because of Ryan Boatright. I say great I am glad he is gone. The only problem is they should have done it long ago. Johnson listened to the wisdom of her friend Roberts. Last year Mr Hull championed the cause alone. The only good part today is we are not stuck without a lousy teacher.

Doesn't anyone watch the bills they are posted in the board Book where is it shown that he took money? Again the administration is the biggest mis user of money in this district. Would the board have to have a closed session meeting to fire him in not they could get into trouble.

Shelia also would not report the student who what text messages to a Science teacher early this year. This teacher showed her breasts. Finally someone reported her to the police and she was charged.

Shelia should go but many are happy to see Cam gone as well if it is true. The school is a horrible place with corruption and coverups

  113. How did the teams have the worst records under him? The football team hasnt been to the playoffs since the 1982-1983 season. Basketball has had its ups and downs, Martens 1994-1995 team I think had 5 wins. Soccer has had a good last couple of years, girls basketball has improved. The holiday basketball tournament is talked about as the best in the area. No, he did not take money that isnt even an issue with the money he makes. He is doing 2 jobs, jobs that in other districts would each earn on average $70,000each. If in fact he is fired who do you think would want to come and work two jobs in this district for one salary? I think we should do what the last comment said wait and see what happens and pray for the gossipers.

But i know no one will stand up for him because every one is too afraid they will be Johnsons next target including the proncipal. As far as im concerned the State of Illinois needs to fire everyone at the Service center cause they are as corrupt as they come. I have worked with him closely for the last 5 years and have known him alot longer. I know he did nothing wrong and this is all Johnson who has the superintendent kissing her butt. I think Cam should get ahold of the Board if he is innocent and tell them his story. Remember they helped the teacher at Bardwell.

Also the district saw the biggest jump in test scores this year. They are up about 10%. Why don't you give them all credit for that. But you will not you will just sit behind the scenes and do nothing. Probably don't live or goto our schools.

  137. August 12, 2012 10:58 PM - I wholeheartedly agree, there is truly more good going on quietly in our district within the buildings. Few outsiders enter if they do not have children in the district, including the Board and admin. don't truly know the daily good things that go on because of those committed to teaching our children.
While the Board & others are worrying about an image that was destroyed by people that preceeded them by poor decisions. They think a ex football player is going to change all that. Let the teachers lead the way and you will see the image change.

    ReplyDelete
  138. The teachers said they where the lowest in the area not the State.

Don't believe anything on here about Leadbetter or any of the others that someone is saying they are getting fired or have misused money and are in trouble with the board. This is just someone who doesn't like the blog and is trying I believe to make a point about statements on here. Go back and read the statements against those employees and you can see when someone brings up a point about how they got access to the money or gave low bids they say something different about the person. I don't believe the board has taken the credit cards away either and they sure haven't made the policy for them according to the law. You are right about the image thing the board thinks if they dress the district up no one will see the problems that are there.

Board member, Johnson prides herself on being anti people. Unions and such are not something she cares about. She is not a team player, she is a lone destroyer of unity within the ranks. She likes to play people against each other for her personal agenda. On another note, my aunt was asked to help sports boosters because her daughter was a student there, because the sports boosters can not get any parents to help them. They might have a petty cash funds that is allowed by the IL School Code but any money taken out whoever did it was to have the original receipt and turned in so the money can be accounted for. Why are they looking for a replacement for Jay? Although I think he looks the other way bur for the credit card they are suppose to have someone that doesn't have a card look at those charges and if you have someone that doesn't know the law those can be misused. According to the IL Administration Code all money at schools is suppose to be accounted for so here is another thing this board has not made sure they are following the law.

  155. As a coach & teacher at East High, I was sad to hear that Cam is gone. He worked his tail off for Tomcat Athletics. He may have had some indiscretions in his personal life, but let's not let that detract from his work as AD. Some teams struggled, that's true- but I can honestly say that forward motion occurred in ALL sports during his 4 years. You can't go from 0-9 to 9-0 in a year, progress is essential.

As for the student knocking up a trainer, that occurred after the student graduated. Yes, STILL a terrible idea on the part of the trainer, but not Cam OR Sheila's fight to stage. No matter where that former trainer ends up, I can guarantee she will make bad decisions, be inappropriate with male students, and play favorites among athletes.

Also the District thought enough of her that when they needed help with training Secretaries they didn;t hesitate to call her and she did that for almost 3 years. Really Shes Alumni and has dedicated too much time for someone to call her a trouble maker and yes sometimes she didnt agree with the district and she would tell them so Is that really wrong?

  161. Isn't all the employees suppose to take a Ethic's Class and Code of Conduct Class I know where we work we do every year and that explains what is acceptable and what isn't. Everyone should know that using any monies of a district for personal use is not accepted. Yes, the Board is suppose to have a policy in place about use of credit cards and the IL School Code and Administrators Code covers that too. The Superintendent is suppose to enforce it. There are a couple of districts that have a committee of community member that look over the receipts. Why are employees doing bids that should be done by the finance committee not an employee. If you are fed up go to the States Attorney if you have a problem with it or contact The State Board of education.

    ReplyDelete
  162. I understand the problem with the bids. Nestor and Scott are the . Cam biggest violators so how can the Board pick on Cam. Cam had his entire family helping he worked 12 hours per day. Yes he did the wrong thing and bids need to be followed. That is why you bid. If the local companies only get to bid and a new one comes in with a cheaper price the district should not call the old one and tell them to match the price I get that.

I am glad Johnson finally got around to fixing that. She could have fixed that years ago when Weaver and Carlson told her that was happening. I will not look back at least it is getting fixed. I get that Cam was the first one to get caught. But to punish him like they did is wrong.

Scott and Nestor and now David Finaly do this all the time.

  163. Finley is out for lunches and boating with the contractors all the time. In fact he went fishing with Cordigan last week. Scott gets all kinds of gifts he never turns back to the District in fact the old BOE member Mccue gets no quote work all the time. There are other pump companies. Scott always calls the contractors and gives them the price. So did Nestor who has Alarm Detection donate all the time to his wrestling clubs. The Board turned the Alarm bid around after Nestor and Finley tried to give it to them and they did not have the lowest bid. So why are they punishing Cam.

    ReplyDelete
  164. Cam is now going to have to hire a lawyer if the BOE does not give him his job back. We all need to take up a collection for him if that happens. He did not know he did the wrong thing. Ms Johnson if you are really cleaning things up start with the Building and Grounds department.

I think Cam should be able to work with students and lets forget about AD lets see how that goes when his family is not there to help.

  167. Dear August 14, 2012 3:02 PM,

When engaging in internet fights and particularly when insulting the intellect of others over the internet, I find it best to use proper grammar.

  169. A series EA style blunders lead to the demise of adult education. EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

    ReplyDelete
  170. The Leadbetter family has been a strong supporter of EA athletics for many years. If you people have nothing better to do than to spread gossip on the blog, perhaps you should volunteer to help the sports boosters and give the athletic program a boost. Cam Leadbetter worked with only the kids in mind, and any other family history should be just that-- Family history not to be made public.

  171. Here's a quote from the Beacon article about the adult high school program:

Muhammad said that the district isn’t sure why it lost the grant, but that the competitiveness of the funding is steeper than usual. Administrators are waiting on reviewer’s comments, and will be applying again.

“It’s been such a long standing program and has become a staple, a fabric of this high school and district as a whole. It’s disappointing for us as well. Had we had any inclination, we would have been better prepared,” (Clayton) Muhammad said.

What does "had any inclination" mean? Could this have been foreseen and the money shuffled around to at least let people like Ryan Thompson (the man profiled & interviewed in this article) finish their programs and receive their diplomas?

And if Ryan Thompson were a Black man, would Clayton Muhammad's "inclination" have been different?

  172. Good job throwing race into something that has nothing to do with race.

    ReplyDelete
  173. 9:36 said "if".

As in, "if" the shoe fits. No race card being played; just a hypothetical question.

Remember the famous "competence before color" editorial about the Robert Green situation by our illustrious Mr. Muhammad? How'd that work out for our district?

  174. Why is the school paying for someone 35 years old that is why we have Waubonsee. I am not sure what they are doing

  175. The Urban League is a huge detriment to Aurora. Why East continues to support this sham outfit is beyond reason.

    ReplyDelete
  176. I have left Aurora more than 30 years ago. So sad to hear about the decay in District 131 and with much of the city. I find it astonishing to hear how bad things are with the low test scores and low graduation rates. I wish the teachers all the luck in the world, but I believe there really is no solution, especially when the language barrier is so paramount.

Never dreamed this could happen. Very sad indeed.

  177. I was at training the other day and was talking with a new teacher. I asked what building are you working at? She said Quad County. I continued to enquire what is our role. One of the admins from CSC said they have transferred students from outplaced programs in Dekalb and Naperville there. I asked why?. She said it is saving the District over a million this year. Instead of making wild assumptions about a program ask questions.

I too started with my back up but it appears there is sound thinking.

    ReplyDelete
  178. Saving the district money is good but if Quad County doesn't have the same training as qualified teachers for the child's disabilities then there is no savings. why are we hiring teachers for that shouldn't they be doing that?

  179. I'd like to know what the blog administrator's criteria is for removing posts. There are so many ridiculous and inflammatory statements and accusations made on this blog that it is an embarrassment to the district. I have made comments in the past with, what seem to me, constructive suggestions for district improvement and have had them removed by the blog administrator. When I see that, it makes my blood boil. If you remove a post, please give us a reason. It is your blog and you may do whatever you like, but explain why some posts are okay and others are not. - A District Employee

    ReplyDelete
  180. Co-administrator here--

I can't speak for both of us administrators, but I can tell you that I have removed only three posts from this blog over the past two months. One was a duplicate of a previous post, one had no message (just a punctuation mark), and the third included 2 obscenities.

    ReplyDelete
  181. 12:48 p.m., if having a post on a blog removed makes your blood boil, you either:

    --have serious anger-management issues

--take yourself & this blog WAY too seriously

    and/or

    --need to get a life.

    ReplyDelete
  182. And at least on this blog they tell you a post has been deleted. On Openline Blog, it just vanishes. And it's NEVER due to obscenity -- those stay. It's always purely that you made a point that's contrary to Openline's opinion, and he can't refute it. He doesn't want to let reason or facts get in the way.

    ReplyDelete
  183. Just thought of something. You've turned on comment moderation. so if a post was removed, that means it first was approved. How many moderators ARE there, and are you all on the same page?

    ReplyDelete
  184. Yeah mommies, why can't we say what we want? Even if you don't agree with it.

    ReplyDelete
  185. I see plenty of posts from both sides of issues on this blog. As for not approving obscenities or duplication, it's the blog admins' choice.

6:22 p.m., you CAN "say what you want", but it might not be published.

    Get over it.

    ;)

    ReplyDelete
  186. "As for not approving obscenities or duplication, it's the blog admins' choice."

But that doesn't answer the question. How many blog administrators are there? And if a post was "obscene" why did it have to be removed when comment moderation is enabled? That means that at least one moderator thought the post WASN'T obscene, and approved it.

    ReplyDelete
  187. Maybe a post was approved/published before an admin noticed the obscenities. People do make mistakes, you know--especially in D131.

  188. There will be a special Board of Education meeting Monday at 6:00 p.m. There is only one item on the agenda:

"Executive Session for the Purpose of Discussing the Appointment, Employment and Dismissal of a Specific Employee"

    Anybody know what that's about?

    ReplyDelete
  189. I noticed that buried last in the curriculum section of the board agenda is the final district report on ISAT testing. It shows a steady increase in student test scores over the past four years. These increases have been going on for many more years than that.

I'm sure this report will not be released publicly until after they finish negotiating the contract with the teachers union. There no way they want to admit the teachers are doing anything positive.
