Here's a link to the FOIA requests since January:

https://v3.boardbook.org/Public/PublicItemDownload.aspx?ik=37150292

There are 17 pages of requests, with 22 names listed of people requesting information.

Yes, Ralph Padron has submitted multiple FOIA requests...but so have Leslie Carpenter, Ken Darby, Steve Lawson, and Donald Rutowski.

Yet it's ONLY Mr. Padron who is being criticized for wasting the district's time and money with FOIA requests. Wonder why??

Insider 131 said...

Remember this, without the FOIA's, Padron would have never exposed the corruption at East Aurora. He forced them to address these violations and it cost several of them their jobs rightfully so. Without these FOIA's there would not be any pending investigations and all the corrective action was taken as a result of his investigation. I know for a fact he is researching Tyler and Popp. Who knows what he may find about both of them at their previous school districts. If there is something there, he will find it.

Fed up said...

Popp worked in Padrons district (204) holding numerous positions . Popp was promoted many times elevating to Assistant Superintendent in one of the highest rated district in the state; some will argue the highest. Why didn't Padron investigate him then. Why didn't he investigate him when he was hired at East like he is doing everyone else; It's personal.

Fed up with "Fed up" said...

I looked at the list of FOIA requests and saw multiple requests by Ralph Padron. I also saw multiple requests by Steve Lawson, Ken Darby (now a School Board member), and Leslie Carpenter. Maybe their FOIA's are motivated by personal reasons, too; I don't really care, as long as corruption in D131 is exposed for what it is!

Tell the truth said...

Everyone but Darby is tied to Padrones address . Padrone did not do a thing Popp caught up with Feltes and Rana and fired them. Give credit where credit was due. Padrone has cost us over $100,000 these Requests have been going on since Roberts.

Fact is he extorted $7,500 from the district and wanted more. Padrone was told many he will never go away. That is sick that he spends so much time distroying people's career with wild accusations. We can the accounting sloppy but not corrupt.

Where there's smoke there's fire said...

Wow...the 20 others ("everyone but Darby") who requested FOIA's are all tied to Ralph Padron??

That's a LOT of influence Mr. Padron has in our district...looks like he deserves our thanks instead of criticism.

Tell the truth said...

Padrone made up the names they are all sent to his address. If the person was real they would have a address. They can not get fired they are not district personnel.

We has no influence he is just insane.

Truth to power said...

If you really believe that Mr. Padron is making up all those names, then YOU'RE the one who is insane...

Along with delusional, paranoid, and clueless.

Insider 131 said...

How bout discussing the content of the FOIA's instead of the names.
No one has done more for our District in exposing and stopping the corruption at our schools than Mr Padron. Hopefully one day I would like to thank him personally for all his work and willingness to confront those who were behind this mess. THANK YOU RALPH

Tell the Truth said...

Then answer this why will they not provide their address? Then should we assume they all live with Padrone. What did he expose many of us were on to Feltes long before Padrone and Popp took corrective action.

FOIA said...

Some of the people requesting FOIA's did provide their address (in addition to Mr. Padron). There were FOIA documents mailed to Laurie Blasing and Bridget Erickson, for example. "Tell the Truth", you have a strange obsession with Ralph Padron. I agree with Insider 131--we should be discussing the content of the FOIA's instead of the names.

anonymous1 said...

Don't you all get this?? Hanley is busy trying to discredit Padrone because there is MASSIVE CORRUPTION in the Central Office- that is why Matt was given the $40,000 hush money-- this is why he is so busy writing these anti- Padrone comments all day- There are some serious skeletons in the closet!!

Say what said...

Matt Hanley has too much class to participate in this foolishness. Ralph was being fed info from member of the maintenance staff like Jesse Vargas and Dave Finley. When Padron first started with accusations against Feltes he was not getting any info from the FOIA. He is no geniuse , he is reaching. When is the attorney General going to rule on the FoIa's. He has two issues and neither will lead to any action by outside entities. Why didn't he investigate Popp when he was first hired. Why didn't he investigate why Superintendent Birkett promoted Popp in 204; that's his home district

Stay away said...

I attended the meeting last night and it was not a soap opera. It was board members asking questions about Curiculum and other spending. Popp talked about funding. The way a board meeting should run. Mr Padron that is why we elected a board. Let them do their jobs. If you are so interested in 131 move here.

Chapa Lavia wants to run for Mayor and she is a major part of why her own district lost 36 million. We don't need a career politician who spent the State iinto bankruptcy. We don't need someone who passed unfunded mandates and a teacher evaluation system that provides inequity to districts like EA that lack Curriculum and a fair living wage. Whoever runs against her should look at the way the EA students and teachers have been treated. Her record alone as the head of Education committees should not get her elected.

From: Ralph Padron
Subject: Inquiry on PAS International Consulting Fees

Recently I requested via FOIA Consultants hired by Superintendent Mike Popp. Upon reviewing the invoices and viewing the PAS website, it appears that this firm was hired to give guidance in building leadership skills thus maximizing their abilities to communicate and manage.

I ask the following questions

Isn’t this what a $ 250,000.00 Superintendent was hired for.
He should have these skills thus be able to mentor those beneath him
.
Invoice states meetings with Popp ,Glotzbach, Reyes Childress & Tyler.
Why would they need training in these areas
They should have these skills in order to lead and manage their areas.

The charges are $375.00 per hour.

Doesn’t Bernie Weiler possess identical skills and is more familiar with the District. Hisfees are substantially less.

Did Mike Popp bring in another vendor from his former Dist 204 era

Will this be an expense appearing on a regular basis
Could this money be spent more productively in the education of children
Is this current Board of Ed aware of this vendor, their purpose, and comfortable with this expense

Please review the attached invoices and ask yourself

IS THIS A NECESSITY
CAN THIS BE JUSTIFIED

Respectfully
Ralph Padron

Outrageous! said...

THREE HUNDRED SEVENTY-FIVE DOLLARS PER HOUR???

I'm a secretary, and I have to work almost THIRTY hours to make $375.00. So our district pays 30 times as much per hour for what? "Building leadership skills"...what a load of (expensive) nonsense!

Thank you, Mr. Padron, for uncovering and exposing this exorbitant waste of money!

Do something said...

If they can not lead or manage they should all get fired. These four are so ill prepared to lead they need lessons. The new BOE needs to take immediate action. NOW. Your honeymoon period is over.

Eyes opened and amazed at the wasteful spending in 131. said...

According to Mr. Padron's FOIAs some top admin in 131 have been meeting and receiving consultation for the better part of the last year. Do you think it is possible they were consulting on how to position themselves for an eventual no vote to the insulting contract the teachers were offered. Learning how to intimidate with "new" evaluations and training on how to instill fear. Roberts used up reserves and cried poor, time for new strategy.
I hope the teachers are finally able to have their membership stand strong and win what they have deserved for a very long while.
This community member is behind them.

Fed up said...

How many hours did Padron work for the 10,000 he received for consulting. One reason the district is in such a conundrum is unqualified individuals trying to perform outside their skill set. I imagine we could take the music teacher and have him teach physics.. Get rid of the science department and have the arts teach their classes. Arroyo has flown thousands of miles around the world but I don't want him piloting any plane I'm on. Laesch is a journeyman carpenter but I wouldn't have him plumb my home. Johnson is an accountant but I wouldn't want her to oversee the math department . Quenneville is a great coach for the Blackhawks but he was below average player. The heart surgeon does not install crowns. 204 is air conditioning classrooms but talking about a operating deficit for next year. Padron need to go home. A student brought a knife in a building in 204 and the parents were never notified, go home Little man

Tell the truth said...

The district is in a mess because the old board did not hire the right superintendent. Popp was only a Director at 204 which shows he was not even a assistant superintendent.
Yes, I do agree the district has unqualified people. We have Hanley who cuts and pastes article out of the Beacon and calls them his own. Popp who never made it to assistant sup at 204. Childress who is a teacher trying to run the tech department. BTW, Padron you should look into the waste there, because she does not know. Hundreds of thousands in equipment tossed because it was bought for home use and not school use.
Tyler, a teacher trying to run a business office. Glotzbach a music teacher running HR. Truckenbrog, a music teacher running secondary curriculum. Waddle, a asst principal running the entire district teaching and learning. A retired cop running the B&G department.
Truckenbrog, DeMare,Tyler, Childress's new role, Hanleys promotion and Waddle are all decisions of Popp. When is it going to end.

Lots of job opportunities in our district! said...

When Will This Community Ever Wake Up said...

The administration wouldn't need advanced management skills at $375 an hour if they had an experienced workforce to assist in running the district. It must be very difficult to get grEAt results with a teaching force that is more migratory than this areas student population. I can't imagine trying to run any organization without experienced workers, especially a difficult area like East Aurora.

The community is awake said...

But someone must be dreaming!!!

Poor leadership said...

When principals at the middle school tell their entire staff if you want to look at other places to work, then we don't need you, the rest of the staff feels dejected. When principals forget to submit paperwork on deficient teachers, and they are allowed to return, the staff feels under valued. When principals miss deadlines to file observations, and they have to do it again, the staff feels disrespected. When principals don't care to question teachers why they are leaving to try and make things better, the staff feels demoralized. When the cycle continues for years unchecked, the staff leaves.

Rayanne said...

A number of years ago I was chastised for talking to middle school teachers. I was a D131 school board member. That was a no-no. The Board at that time along with the districts attorney chose to focus on my error rather than the reason I was there. Teachers were very concerned about the escalating fear in the halls and classrooms. The violence and gang activity. Over five years later, I have heard nothing about improvement in this area nor does the schools report cards reflect a marked improvement in the meeting and exceeding of the district's students. Here is a school who decided to take the bull by the horns. No more excuses from students, families, teachers....or admin!!! They made changes!

You have the majority of teachers staying. The ones who are leaving are those horrified with what they are seeing and fleeing. It has nothing to do with the underpaid, over-qualified lot that stays. We are here for the duration, because we love these kids, even though we are paid 20,000-50,000 dollars less. Oh, except for our $250,00 a year superintendent. He is well-paid, or doing nothing.

I work at our FDK Center, and because of the school being furnished with the proper Curiculum, IPads and full day instructional time as well as the districts willingness to bus the children, we are scoring kids to the national average. That said, I was excited with news of the new board members and a return of Johnson to a leadership role. The FDK teachers know who pushed the center. I am also happy that we will have full day Pre-K and all children will have FDK classes across the district. Last school year we had been told that was a three wait, with no mention of full day pre K. Certainly, a accomplishment of the new BOE and not administration.

However, what are you thinking allowing again another reshuffle of AP's and the repurposing of Joan Glotzbach to run elementary programs.I now appears her main role along with the new Asst. Sup is to spend all day evaluating us. What does Joan Glotzbach know about Elementary Ed? The new Asst Sup of Teaching and Learning should spend her days writing and fixing Curiculum for all grades. Many our questioning why someone who has never had a role other than AP is now Asst. Superintendent. Many have stated it was because she worked with Popp and Thruckenbro. Needless to say the new board did not do their homework.

Johnson pushed getting FDK built but she did not initiate the movement. During the 2013 election process Kirsten Strand talked about FDK as part of her campaign; Johnson actually scoffed at the idea at that time. The consultant that came in and surveyed staff and assess the district needs concluded in her report that FDK would be beneficial . The need for FDK was the consensus from the teachers; assign the credit where it belongs. Afterwards Johnson came to red and black and announced that FDK was going to be a reality.

It not complicated said...

what don't you get? Your vote was a part of negotiations and nothing more. The district must and will continue to function no matter what the vote. In the end Popp is not the teachers union spokesman he answers to the BOE and speak for the district. If the state adequately funded the district it still does not mean the teachers get everything they want

Time for change said...

How Glotzbach can still remain is unbelievable. I can't believe after making Aird take the fall for her, not checking Clarks finger prints and making Bradish take the fall for that, costing the district hundreds of thousands in lawsuits, she will get put in charge of schools.

Teachers beware in reading the lastest chapter in the central office shuffle, Glotzbach will now teach us leadership. some leader her entire department lives in fear. We now have three central office big wigs devoted to evaluation. Does our union not see the writing on the wall. They just hired another Assistant Superintendent to do evaluations. that now makes three. How can they evaluate anyone when they never provided a instruction plan?

Sarah, we understand your family situation but you are elected to represent us. Please take a leave of absence or resign. We need a strong leader to stand up and speak up. Please do the right thing and resign. Please take Carla Hettinger with you. When are you going to retire, Carla.

It appear others are seeing the truth of what happens said...

Johnson is good for riding a train after she sees which direction it is going. If she sees there is lots of support and will get positive press. She will catch up, hop on and claim to be the initiator and champion for the cause. If by some chance she hops on the wrong train, she hops off and shoves someone under the next bus that passes.

fact is said...

Strand, Hull , Peryea and Leonard openly attacked Johnson for doing FDK, I remember it and Popp agreed with them. I was at the meeting when it was stated we have extra money because of insurance. Get your facts straight. Strand also let Popp continue to say they would build a Kinder/administrative center. She lied when asked why all children could not have all day kinder.

Strand is also benefiting from using the district demographics with a 21st Century grant. More to come on that. I involves Bardwell School. Let us not forget Strand was responsible for voting in the $40,000 increase for Handley. I have been very disappointed in her and regret helping her get on the board. She has done nothing for support staff and teachers. Our rights and freedom of speech have been violated more by her than the negative words she has spoken out Johnson being the bully. Johnson never effected my job, Strand has. She gathers information and takes it back to Popp. Then the real bully comes out.

Telling like it is said...

The BOE and Dr Popp are not to blame, our union is;. If the administration and or BOE puts a offer out and our leadership says yes they have won. The difference is we are not going to take it anymore. Hettinger needs to go retire. She is always on vacation at the memberships expense. Interim is to lazy to teach so she sells us out for "full release". This year they limited the number of reps who could sit at the table. Support staff was not represented and the teachers got a crappy deal. Some are willing to step forward, but they need to have some ethics and step down. Harding is no solution, he sold the district out when he became a central office crony he still has ties to Glotzbach and Childress.

As for Glotzbach and company they are sending us a message and we need to be very careful about evaluations. I have been told by a reliable source that principals are being asked to define the teachers per building that do not embrace the new Curiculum and they will be evaluated out,.

Dumb said...

You know his name in Hanley right, NOT hanDley. Is that an insult or are you just dumb.

Who is dumber said...

Since nobody in the district knows Handley or Hanley because we never see him why should we know. He only gained fame because of his over paid salary. No, you are dumb.

New leadership needed said...

The union will not protect us. They have created a entire department of evaluations nobody's job is safe. We need to show solidarity and Intherum and Hettinger are not the answer. Before a vote on contract we need to vote on new leadership.

Seems a bit overreacting said...

Dumb-. Unless you were the one directly insulted I can't imagine a typo would cause anyone to start being childish and start calling people dumb.

anonymous1 said...

That's great. Instead of supporting us, or spending this money for the children, we get the Gestapo.. Funny because the latest pile of crap. evaluations being tied to testing scores, isn't even a part of Danielson, and Danielson herself said that this should lead to litigation! I agree let's get some class action suits going!!! Bring it on!! State law said...

It is state law! The state of Illinois mandates that teacher evaluation is tied to performance for a certain percentage of their evaluation! Get over yourself

Disappointed said...

Glotzbach, Truckenbrog and Waddle are all planning evaluations as their full time job. We have no curiculum and they are still writing it. NOT FAIR. Meanwhile principals no longer will have a Directors. The new titles are leadership development. No mention of completion of units.
They plan on getting rid of experienced teachers so they don't have to pay us. Central news is Popp hit send to the new changes and claimed he is vacationing in a remote part of the world cell phones don't work.

Is the BOE that stupid that they are willing to buy into this. God help this district! Darby, Arroyo and Lesch made promises to all of us. Arroyo claimed they never got the contract. Did they not approve of this after all they are now in charge. Why is Johnson allowing Glotzbach to have more power she has sat there and allowed her reign of terror and incompetence.

Union NO said...

If we had a union to support us this would not be happening. We need to vote no again no matter what! We should also start a petition of no confidence on Intherm and Hettinger. Intherm took care of herself with no release. Hettinger should retire.

anonymous2 said...

Get over yourself- Matt it is not tied to Danielson which is the mandate we adopted!! Do you not think low scores won't trickle over to the admins? For no support!! For dunning the teachers day in and day out so they cannot do their jobs!! And Matt, did you know it costs districts twice as much to constantly bring in new hires vs. keep the knowledgeable staff they have? No, I bet you and Popp didn't do your homework on this one either

Get over yourself said...

Do your homework. ALL school districts in Illinois MUST incorporate student growth in their evaluation system by 2016. 131 must incorporate it sooner because it is in the bottom 10% of school districts.

Get over yourself- The "state" is not some omniscient, omnipotent being. It is a bunch of white men in suits backed by the Pearson and Gates Corporations who want to get all of their products, i.e. PARCC tests, computers programs, i.e. Language!Achieve 3000 in schools thus giving them hegemony over curriculum and money. Class action suits by teachers vs. New York state have already begun. My point Poindexter, is that these "mandates" are man-made and not by educators. My other point genius is that Danielson herself doesn't see this as a legally binding part of the evaluation process. Just because the "State" mandates something, doesn't mean it can't, or shouldn't be challenged. It is very similar to the privatization going on in the penal system. Difference is, some aren't willing to just drink the Kool-Aid. And if this questioning makes me part of the 'problem" as you characterize it, good. BRING IT ON!!

BS- the admins are the ones promoting and implementing it and shoving it down our throats- They will be the ones marking us unsatisfactory when/if the kids don't hit the mark. Do they take into consideration socio-economic issues that affect performance? Language issues? Or the child's whole educational history that has produced the child sitting in your classroom today? Of course not. Why don't they ever challenge ANYTHING that comes down the pike that is absurd? LIKE PARCC testing that chewed up a good 1/3 of instructional time and which many districts are courageously opposing? Don't tell me where and when I can use my 5th amendment rights --at least I am speaking up. How do you know what actions I have taken, legal and otherwise? Believe me, I have spoken out and stood up for what is right in this district more times than I can count As far as being sanctimonious? I am not the one telling you WHAT to say or WHERE to say it, am I?

anon 2 - yeah I mean 1st amendment rights... But I refuse to incriminate myself either!!!

Excuses. Excuses said...

So are you saying students of low socioeconomic status can't make progress? Yep. Part of the problem.

The admins have no choice. They have to implement it. Yeah, Chicago talked a good game about protesting it, but in the end, they had to play ball like every district in the state. You can't afford to lose state and federal funding by not participating in PERA or PARCC.

I love how you would like to make excuses for a student's growth. There is no excuse. You must have a commitment to the expectation for excellence. Or go home. You're not worth the paper that your evaluation is written on.

Unbelievable said...

Mc Tighe has been conducting professional development and writing units for administration because they are not qualified. It is unbelievable that it has cost $56,000. The BOE should no longer rubber stamp this. Dr Waddle Asst Sup of Teaching and Learning seems polite but not experienced. Why did the BOE allow Dr Popp to hire her?

Time for a strike we need our rights and money, if the district can spend money on under qualified administrators then they can spend on us.

Tired of negative idiots said...

Unbelievable - you have no idea what you're talking about. Administration is not writing curriculum. Teachers are writing the curriculum, not a single administrator in the group. Teachers who know our students and work with them all the time. Teachers that can choose appropriate activities and expectations based on the various grade levels.
If you don't know what you're talking about - shut up.

Listen Excuses Excuses, it doesn't take two advanced degrees from Ivy League schools (which I have, thank you very much)to understand that coming from the projects with a single parent, does present a child with more difficulties in life than one from a more prosperous two parent household. This is Sociology 101, which I have taught. Numerous times. Knowing your student's background doesn't make you a bigot, it helps you tailor lesson plans to better address your student's needs. Part of the problem? Naaaaaah. I have been in the trenches with these kids for years. Getting ZERO help from any admin. An administrator is supposed to be like the head surgeon helping the other surgeons perform an intricate operation to save a patient's life, handing them the tools they need in order to do this. Not setting up three tiers of evaluative departments to root out older teachers ( the ones with knowledge of students, of teaching) replacing them with young inexperienced teachers who need extensive mentoring and who leave after a year or two Studies have shown it is far more expensive for a district to hire new teachers and train them vs. keeping the experienced staff they already possess. Here's a quarter genius. Buy some common sense.

Ivy League? Really? said...

Ivy League My A@$!

There are definitely struggles with our students, but it is still your job to help them make gains. The evaluation process measures PROGRESS. If you can't make progress with each of your students, and what is your job? Using your Ivy League education to make excuses, point fingers, and write poorly constructed blog posts?

You ARE a part of the problem. Younger teachers may come to the district with a new energy, less excuses, and more knowledge about how to work within the CCSS framework.

Get packing!

anonymous2 said...

Matt you are not being paid $120,00 a year to sit and bash teachers because they try their best to teach their students and raise questions about what is patently egregious teaching practice. And when we do ask questions tell us we are no good, "not worth the paper the evaluations are written on" etc. You are not working in the best interests of our district!!!

If someone disagrees with you, why does it have to be Matt? said...

This isn't Matt. This is a teacher without an Ivy League education, but an excellent team member. I am making a difference with my students and looking forward to finding a way to put that into objective terms.

What are you threatened by?

anonymous2 said...

Ivy League my ass - What Moron does not want to see students make progress? That was never the question. And just like it takes a village to raise a child, it takes the efforts of ALL OF US to help our students succeed. When teachers reach out constantly and have that hand slapped away, and are told it's all on you, that's where the problem lies. No one is questioning helping students make gains. That's what we are there for. Should you place the poor SAT performance on our feet year after year? The admins certainly take credit when a point or two increase in incurred. Then the credit is all theirs. Talk about poorly constructed blogs. Yours are full of baseless assertions, and insults aimed at teachers. You are the spokesperson for ALL of us, not just the powers that be. I know plenty of experienced teachers who are full of energy, but again and again are demoralized by you and your lot. None of this is in the students' interests, but you are simply a careerist, and could care less. LET US DO OUR JOBS AND LEAVE US ALONE. WE KNOW WHAT TO DO!! Or, make us waste our time on a bs evaluation process that is nothing but the Emperor's new clothes. Been there, done that, got that t-shirt.

I have come across another “High Priced” Consulting firm referencing Curriculum
The Write Tools
Centennial Colorado

www.thewritetools.net

$ 9,200.00 3/17/15 PO 157288
$ 6,450.00 10/7/14 152649
$ 15,750.00 8/14/14 151084

Total $ 31,400.00

What is the purpose of this Consulting Firm at EA
Will this be an ongoing expense
(East Aurora has a seminar scheduled August 5-7 2015)

They are headquartered in Colorado (Travel Expenses Accrued)
If this is necessary wouldn’t there be someone in the Chicago area to do this job
Is this current Board of Ed aware of this vendor, their purpose, and comfortable with this expense

CAN THIS BE JUSTIFIED

This is not Matt...if you are doing such a great job, feeling supported, good for you keep it up!! because there are many who do not have that experience, are not supported, in fact are persecuted. Do you think that we have not seen a hundred initiatives come in and then die out in the district? That we didn't spend hundreds of hours we could have spent on planning and instructional time for our students but had to "look busy" because "Big Brother " was watching. The CCSS are just another example of this. Previously we had Illinois State Standards, Curriculum Mapping, etc. Now we do the dance of PAARC,the domains of Charlotte Danielson, PLC's etc. Instead of bashing those with more experience, watch and learn.

Quote from the article:

"When you run off your veteran teachers, you not only do not have teachers who can mentor the younger staff members and help them reach their full potential, but you also are increasing the odds that you are going to hire some less gifted teachers just to fill the vacancies. That makes it that much harder to understand why so many state legislatures are appropriating millions for inexperienced Teach for America instructors instead of spending that money to keep their best teachers in the classroom"

Ralph,

The BOE votes on these bills each month so they have reviewed them. WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU ARE? Go away. Moron.

These are reputable companies that support our curriculum development.

Big fan of Padron said...

Those bills add up to more than $110,000.00...that's a lot of money! I commend Mr. Padron for challenging some of the HUGE expenditures in our district, making sure we get maximum value for our tax dollars.

And just because the BOE votes on something doesn't mean they thoroughly reviewed it. Many board members and administrators are rubber-stampers. Mr. Padron (and others like him) help provide the checks and balances our community deserves.

Keep doing what you're doing, Ralph...we need more people like you!

To "Go Away, Ralph"
Examples of Excellence when the BOE voted to approve:

Curriculum chairperson, Stella G. could not explain anything she read from the curriculum committee minutes, that she recommended the Board approval.
BOE reviewed in committee and voted in closed session and open meeting on a Gender equality policy. Then blamed someone else for introducing a policy that was supposedly poorly written.
Yes, BOE reviews and votes each month........who would most people consider a "moron?" A rubber stamper or a ambitious person who perseveres through continued road blocks?

Go, Ralph!

Get out Ralph said...

Fan 2 Padron has no clue about education and therefore can not judge professional development. Better than 60 teachers attended "The Right Tools program. It is cheaper to bring the speaker to us than fly teachers around the country. Common Core has forced districts to provide training. I also believe it is paid by a grant so get your stories straight.

Supports Ralph said...

"...Padron has no clue about education"

Mr. Padron is in his sixties, has a college degree, and his wife is a retired teacher. That adds up to a lot of life experience in general, a considerably amount of time spent in classrooms himself, and being involved for many years with someone in the trenches on a daily basis.

And you "believe" the training is paid by a grant?? Then why are we being billed for +$110,000.00?

I "believe" you're the clueless one!

Silly said...

I drive a car. Does that make me an expert in auto mechanics? My husband is a doctor. Would you want me as your next ER physician? Your assertion lacks common sense.

The consultant fees are reasonable and necessary. You should be grateful that these consultants are working with our teachers! They are bringing us information needed to help with our transition to the CCSS.

Keep blowing that whistle, Ralph! said...

Questioning 110K in spending is a good thing. As a taxpayer making about $20/hour I appreciate Mr. Padron speaking up and challenging these expenditures. I would also want to know whether at least part of this professional development could be done online. My workplace has monthly online training seminars that save our company many thousands of dollars. Why should our district have to spend all this money if there is a less expensive practical alternative?

Go back home said...

Grants are revenue and bills to consultants are expenses. The district can not receive a grant without spending it. It show you do not have a clue moron.

Why does Padron not work in his own district? He is costing us time and energy that could be directed towards the kids.

Good idea, but no said...

Online training is great for somethings, but for this purpose it doesn't cut it. We need job-embedded training to help our teachers.

Not a moron, just wanting to spend our money wisely said...

Many districts throughout the country use online professional development resources:

http://www.edweek.org/dd/articles/2009/03/13/04ddprofdev.h02.html

http://www.jeffcopublicschools.org/online_pd/

These online seminars can be in place of OR in addition to job-embedded training.

$110,000.00 is a great deal of money to spend without questioning or suggesting alternatives. I appreciate that Ralph is willing to go to the trouble of speaking up about this.

For at least 30 years, our district's band students have spent the last week in June at Band Camp. They learn new music, sharpen their marching skills, and develop camaraderie with their fellow musicians. This camp is unique to our district (at least in this area), and is a tremendous source of pride for students, parents, and our community. For the past several years Ms. Amy Huggins has been the director--and she does an outstanding job.

Miss Johnson

I write to inform you of the most recent FOIA Responses containing countless errors going on for quite some time from Matt Hanley. Please review the attached FOIA reply.

FOIA responses are numbered on bottom of page.
Per his letter, this FOIA had 115 copies. The last number shown is 142.
There are 27 pages missing. Where are they?

Duplication of pages is attached. Why am I receiving duplication
Page 1 is redacted then duplicate copy is also redacted. (Double Work) Why?

Mr Hanley has made statements numerous times in print

There are no duplications
Pages are not withheld
FOIA hours are numerous and burdensome
Hours spent on FOIA Emails have been misleading due to the above errors by Mr Hanley

Closing comments

I have questioned Mr Hanley several times on these issues to no avail,
Review attached evidence to support my inquiry.

Please release 2 current FOIA’s being held. I believe compensation from past payments and the amount of $$$$ saved due to my investigations warrants this action.

I strongly suggest Mr Hanley take a course in fully understanding the email retrieval system and locate the errors causing these mistakes. This will result in a more efficient response and cost savings to the taxpayers.

Since Mike Popp will not respond to any of my inquiries, I had no recourse but to turn to the Board of Ed for an objective response.

Consultant fees too much said...

Keep looking Ralph! The $110,000 you've uncovered is the tip of the iceberg. Curriculum brings in consultants for everything--sometimes the consultants even contradict each other. These trainings are definitely not all necessary and definitely not all well attended or worth the money spent.

To the commenter who said that online PD doesn't cut it, online PD is fine with me. There's endless opportunities online for teachers who want to stay current. These consultants aren't "job-embedded" anyway. No consultant has every walked in my classroom and neither has anyone from curriculum. So what's the difference? Also, I hate to say it, but some teachers just go to get out of teaching for the day or for the extra money if it's off hours.

I'd rather have a decent contract and do the job I'm paid to do instead of lining the pockets of these curriculum sharks. We're not lucky as a previous comment said, we're weak and preyed upon because our admin doesn't do their jobs. They just keep spending money thinking that will fix it.

Our students would not be well-suited to sit in front of a computer and gain educational experiences, and her teachers deserve to have engaging experience as well.

Just because you would rather sit in front of a computer to "stay current" does not mean that you have an idea of what best practice is in professional development for teachers.

These professional learning opportunities our job embedded, as they allow the teachers to gather the information, work in small groups to die digest the information and apply it to their current teaching situation, and then bring it back to their classrooms.

You can't get that from watching a PowerPoint on your computer at home. There is coaching involved within these professional development opportunities as well. I have not had one experience where I worked with a group of people that were just there to kill time.

"Cronyfest" indeed. Malaker, Barreiro, and Muhammad were all involved ten years ago in depriving Kaisershot of his high school position. Now they get together again and gloat with other oldtimers while pretending to raise money to help students.

Just checked the longterm forecast, thunderstorms predicted for July 23rd.

For sure! said...

Definitely! Much elbow rubbing and back patting going on. Ms. Johnson has been in attendance in the past. Dan B. & Co. have tried to make AEEF a big deal, and have tried to create a similar student support group, as they have in numerous forms across the river. It will never happen. They may have some people with money involved, but without heart and respect for the students and educators, it will never happen.
As long as the majority of those involved are more concerned with their connection with this group than they are with the group actually doing something for EA, they will continue to fail. The name itself tells you they have no personal commitment to what should be the 'foundation" of the group.....D131 has always been EA not AE.

Skip the cronyfest but do help our kids! said...

I went to the AEEF golf outing registration page. Since I'm not a golfer, I noticed the option to sign up for dinner only, at $30.00. So I went to Go Fund Me and donated that $30 instead to a project to help kids in our community. Here's a link for others who might be inclined to help our kids directly:

Donations to Go Fund Me are tax-deductible. The golf outing is not tax-deductible because you're receiving goods or services.

Just one more reason to skip the (probably soggy) cronyfest on July 23rd...

Many an individual has approached me concerned about your pre election statements concerning
addressing the corruption and those responsible at East Aurora.

I did share with many a voter that you were committed to removing Joan Glotzbach from the district
due to her "Intimidation, Fear, and Countless mistakes" costing EA countless dollars in legal fees and
destroying lives in her position of authority.

You also stated that Mike Popp needed to be removed as he was just inexperienced and not a
very good Superintendent.

In addition, I would like to remind you of the winter meeting we had at Standard Market in which you
supplied us with documents to get Marty Feltes removed.

We had countless conversations concerning the sad state of affairs at EA and it certainly
appears that you are not carrying out your promises to many of us in holding those
responsible accountable during the past era.

Have you changed your mind about Popp and Glotzbach?

I also want to remind you of your statement that you wanted to replace Marty Feltes
as Director if that position ever became available. Did something happen to change that?

Just want you to know that MANY a EA voter requested I confront you on these issues

After paying Hanley $40,000 more he was a no show at the summer school district play. Students and teachers work hard and deserve some PR. No coverage on students in summer band camp or our many summer camps taking place around the district. WHAT DOES HE DO BOE or is he Dr Popp's personal spin Doctor. If Matt gets $40,000 then we should also.

It is also rumored that Dr Popp has a personal adviser at $375 per hour. Thank you to Mr Padron for exposing this.

Send the union and administration a message STRIKE bady STRIKE.

There are still many pending & unresolved issues needed to be addressed

Matt Hanley’s double copying and redacting of emails to include false statements referencing FOIA’s summarization.

Mike Popp’s Consultants: Wasn’t Mike hired because of his knowledge of the Curriculum?
He should be able to conduct these workshops himself thus saving EA $100K +

Vendor Job Tickets were NEVER authorized NOR VERIFIED.
Invoices were never verified.
Purchase orders were generated AFTER WORK WAS PERFORMED and INVOICED
As you know this resulted in million dollar + in violations
Mike Popp was notified of this Publicly multiple times

These Purchasing procedures violations are being corrected as a result of my investigation and publicly presenting them.
Will the Board hold Superintendent Accountable for covering it up
after being notified publicly

Why hasn’t there been an official announcement of Joan Glotzbach’s new position.
Mike Popp was quick to announce his decision of reorganization months ago however
this quickly changed with no explanation. Joan has been removed as Human Resources Asst Superintendent to the delight of all the staff I am in communication with.
Is Joan Glotzbach proficient with Excel Spreadsheets? If not, why would a person in this position be allowed to work until this vital qualification is met.

More questions forthcoming on multiple issues previously publicly addressed and NEW Scandals to be exposed soon !

Ms Johnson, you stood up and voted no in not approving the “List of Bills” month after month
However our concern is “Will you be able to lead this Board (several whom are inexperienced) and insure the public that no hidden agenda’s or “backroom deals” be made.

We’ve had our differences in the past and I would not hesitate for a moment to confront
you nor any other Board Member whom allows this District to take a step back into the past. Corruption cannot be allowed to return to East Aurora.
Big Question: Will this be a Board of Education of holding Mike Popp accountable or will you rubber stamp all his decisions?

New Board fails said...

I was hopeful when the new board members came in that Popp would be kept in check and we'd finally get some accountability from admin. I was hopeful when teachers rallied in solidarity to crush the insulting contract and to demand the curriculum we need to do our job and teach our students. I was hopeful when a new Asst. Superintendent for Teacher and Learning was approved thinking that finally we'd get some leadership in this area after years of haphazard direction and a revolving door of admin.

Instead, the board "rubber stamped" an Asst. Principal with no district experience, no EL experience, and no low-income experience to be the new Asst. Superintendent in charge of curriculum, bilingual, SPED, and assessments. HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE? Could you imagine promoting one of our AP's to Asst. Superintendent? Could you even imagine promoting one of our Principals to Asst. Superintendent?

It's possible because Truckenbrod was her principal in Indian Prairie. That's her main qualification. This appointment is another slap in the face to the hard working teachers in D131 and shows Popp's and Truckenbrod's utter disregard for the population and needs that we have as a district. Either they're clueless or they're arrogant. (And, oh by the way, how did Truckenbrod's direction work out at the high school last year?)

With the demands of this position and the state of our district, this position was too important to turn over to a complete rookie. Yet, that's exactly what our "new" board did when they "rubber stamped" this hire. How long do you think this will take us to recover from? My guess is self-promoting Popp and his buddies will be long gone for greener pastures and, like usual, teachers will be left picking up pieces and our students lose again.

I think the answer to Ralph's question from the prior post is pretty clear. The board already failed to uphold their promises and corruption and backroom deals are business as usual. Another sad day for EA.

SMH said...

To the previous post about the failings of the Board, you made your opinion very clear and I believe, quite accurately. The problem is the new board is a few rookies being misled by a board president who is like a bull in a china shop. She charges ahead with no vision of where she needs to go, at full speed, flexing her authority. The only prerequisite, it seems, to be an admin in 131, is to be from outside the district. Heaven forbid they hire from within and someone from the rank and file gets a peak behind the Wizards curtain.
The teachers and students have been paying a high price for a very long time. The state should have taken over a few years ago, but that is another failure by the next level of government. They, the state, are like negligent parents who make idle threats if rules are not followed. Our district plays the game. They make a promise to do better next time, submit it to the state and they are off the hook of accountability for educating the students to the minimum degree of meeting the standards.
The stuff keeps flowing down hill and the teachers are having it heaped on them. I am sorry, for what it is worth. But thank you for teaching and advocating for the children of 131. Our Board is a disappointment and I regret voting for a couple of them, I thought would be more responsible.

Sad state said...

I think the new board asks many questions and they are trying to learn the district. That said, they are taking Popps word for hiring, they need to stop him. Look at the recent choices.

Hanley, a promotion and raise while teachers do not have a contract. His raise alone was a slap in the face.

Crespo, EAHS Principal. hired with one year of experience as a AD. Would they promote Dennis Renner to run the HS.

Glotzbach, She has no experience in education and she was responsible for many many mistakes. Glotzbach history is setting up and distroying careers. Look at her baggage. Just look at the way she setup Aird, Gentile and Braddish.

Thruckenbrod, He was on the dismissal list at 204.

Now this, Not only is she green but she takes her first week off of a new contract. She reports to Glotzbach so how is it she knows anything about curriculum.

It is time to send the district and our union a message. Vote down the contract in September and demand new leadership.

That is correct Mr Padron the board can ill afford to become a rubber stamp, but that what it appears like.

Time to strike said...

West Aurora teachers have a contract. They received raises equal to our contract and their steps were not deleted. The big difference is my associates make $5,000 to $24,000 more. I blame myself for staying in EA. Dr Popp values himself and his career. His first goal was a administrative center, his second goal bring in all my friends and pay them well his third goal screw the teachers The salary and lack of curriculum is a slap in the face.

Sorry union I vote for a strike you have not represented our needs.

Taxpayer1 said...

The new BOE stopped the administrative center, and all children have FDK starting this fall. That would not have happened with the old BOE. It would have taken years. The new BOE got stradded with bad contracts. I am not ready to give up on them however some need to realize rubber stamping Popp decisions will have them labeled like the old board very quickly.

Many of us realize the many get good deeds Johnson has done for this district.

Just sayin said...

Arroyo and Darby have not kept the promise they ran on. They promised many of us that teachers would get treated fairly. that has not happened. Some have expressed views to the board but are still getting intimidated and bullied by administration. This was done with their encouragement. Arroyo claimed he did know about contract but still has not looked into it. Both remind me of the promises Strand made and quickly jumped into bed with administration. Laesch is doing a great job but they need to support him. Johnson needs to step it up and return to bully she once was with administration. Our administration needs a bully and we need our rights, contract and curriculum.

Contract? said...

I have not heard a thing since school has let out concerning contract negotiations. Does anyone have some accuarate info as to what is going on with that? My sig other finds it quite odd that I have not been kept up-to-date or at least sent a brief email as to what is happening. Because, you know, it might be nice to know if the union is not making any progress and drive us to strike come August.

Taxpayer8 said...

No one board member can change things it takes the whole board. They can discuss with the other board members what they think should be done but if the others don't want it nothing will happen. I will say with all the mistakes Joan has made they have enough to fire her why she stays is a mystery. Nothing changes overnight and since this district is stuck in the past and can't catch up with how other districts have improved nothing will change. Johnson and Lenoard need to go they still believe in the good old buddy system when hiring.

This is not the place for news said...

Why don't you contact your union rep? This is not the place to get reliable information. It is a place for people who spread lies, rumors and glorify old men who waste salary dollars on fruitless FOIA requests.

What's happening said...

We have not heard anything, because they have done nothing. Hettinger has been on vacation and Intherm has been dealing with family issues. We have volunteered compilation survey help but, they did not want help. Some of the issues should have been addressed with d131 administration this summer, but we are paying dues for nothing. In fact only this week they will start addressing issues and bargaining. Some of us will continue to press for a seat at the table and bargaining groups who are in the trenches. This Is our only chance for regaining rights, money and a curriculum. Many believe administration is still controlling the seats at the table. Our union will not pay for a lawyer out of dues to represent us, we use the district attorney. Until we have support staff negoicating for support staff, teachers from the HS as well as middle school negotiating for themselves we will loss our rights and SOULD NOT vote for the contract. We have a right to be at the table not the elementary teachers like the union rep who lied to teachers at Bardwell this was a good contract.

The error of our ways said...

We can see Hanley is at it again by bashing the blog.

I am sorry I supported some of the new members. Hatchett and Laesch seem okay and are attempting to keep promises. Hatchett has talked with teachers and staff to get their ideas on what is wrong with the district. Laesch is working for more union jobs in maintenance.

Arroyo and are a big disappointment. Darby had meeting with many support staff and maintenance groups and promised Glotzbach's head for her multi levels of discrimination of employees. Now he is in charge and he gave her more power by putting her and three others in a evaluation role. Arroyo has not responded to one email and claims he is learning. When he states he will get confidential answers Popp always knows who is complaining. He also put Glotzbach in charge and many feel she will get even. Leonard is still after the union for Feltes and needs to resign.

Johnson has told members of the union she is sorry for her vote on Feltes and we are willing to give her another chance. If you attended meetings last year she stopped Feltes and his spending without the support of any board members by bring our issues up. We would like her to return to that form. She seems to cozy with Popp
Strand is a zero and not worth any comments she has not followed up on anything teachers or support staff needs.

Upon being voted in as a Board Member you specifically PROMISED me I would receive the redacted emails !
You stated to me several times "Please be patient" . It appears you have no intention of honoring this promise.
MANY community members have lost faith that you truly are representing the interests of the students and residents
of East Aurora.

One community member called me stating your comment at the last Board meeting
"We have to trust our employees and let them do their job"
With all the issues brought out recently, how can you trust those in charge for an honest motive.

Prior to you being elected, we spoke SEVERAL TIMES that Mike Popp & Joan Glotzbach needed to be fired.
In addition the numerous times you referred to Kirsten Strand as being a terrible Board Member and a puppet of Popp.
I expect you to deny these statement as only you and I know what we discussed.
It is suspected that you have your eyes on a Political Position thus your broken promises and not engaging in truly cleaning up 131 is obvious.

You are inexperienced and not knowledgable with the cover up at EA under Mike Popp.

Have you read and understood the issues of the $120,000.00 FOIA Officer Matt Hanley?
It is black and white that he has mislead the public on the FOIA's. Will you get involved to prove otherwise?

I find it very difficult to confront you on the above issues but you have betrayed those that supported you
in getting elected and don't expect this support in the future

Very Disappointed in you

Thank you for the update. Must be nice to be able to relax on vacation with a contract in the air. And isn't that a conflict to have a district attorney representing us? Glad I'm paying those dues :(

Follow up said...

If Darby and Arroyo promised to fire Glotzbach they should have followed through. She is the worst sample of HR the district ever had. She has stonewalled many of careers yet hers lives on. I blame Annette Johnson Johnson for that she has charged on getting rid of everyone yet Joan goes on.

I can't stop laughing at everyone said...

Tax payer 1 is Johnson tooting her horn by putting down the old board. The teachers posting is sadddddddd. For those who have a Master degree; did the district tax payers reimburse you?
All the board members are being outed by Peewee Padron. When one lie down with dogs you get up with flees. Arroyo, Darby, Hachett and Johnson actually get it but Johnson stays on the fence trying please everyone. She is still the bully she always was but she is using more tact this time around. John Laesch is not stable, Leonard has no Clue
The board asking questions is governess 101. What matters is their actions once they have answers. Working with the Superintendent means they get it.
Ms Carlson needs to quit whining about the music guy that is really old news and the other teachers care only about themselves.
Attention teachers: money is a temporary motivator. That's why you whine after each contract about your pay. Tell me which private sector industry or profession received 12% increases over the last 4 years; you folks make the Governors argument for him. Will someone please list all the great education accomplishments and compare them to you peers at the other district since you love to compare salaries.
Mr Laesch is blogging also so I want him to explain where the money for all the raises and manpower in maintenance will come from

Excellent Teachers are the Key said...

To: What's happening

You are correct that nothing is happening regarding negotiations this summer but you are incorrect about why. It's not that nothing has happened this summer, it's that there have never been any negotiations in District 131.

The reality has always been that the board tells the union "Here is the contract, take it to the membership" and the union says "OK". It was so very obvious at the question and answer session this past spring. Sarah and Carla had no clue what was in the contract (Something that would be impossible if they were part of negotiating the contract). They had no answers for the members at the Q&A session.

Here is the deal. The system is rigged against the union membership. The system is set up to find the very least amount the district has to pay that 50% +1 person will vote YES to. That is why the board always starts with the lowest offer and then gradually raises it up. The union membership needs to realize a few simple things:

1) You are paid up to $40,000 less than teachers in neighboring districts.
2) The school year must be 181 days long.
3) That means the teachers will not lose one penny (The worst that can happen is that money will be delayed "IF" there is a strike)
4) The more times the teachers vote NO, the better the offer will have to be.
5) No one will stand up for the teachers if they don't stand up for themselves.
6) The only thing to fear is fear itself.

It's time for you as teachers to begin raising the standards in District 131. This begins with you demanding a fair wage, a wage that will keep excellent teachers in District 131.

Matt quit making fun of Ralph. At least he is trying to right wrongs in the district,. YOU Matt, are overpaid, under qualified, and everyone knows it. THE BIGGEST MISTAKE OF ALL IN THIS DISTRICT IS A $40,000 RAISE FOR A NINCOMPOOP- WHEN TEACHERS- THOSE WITH 2 AND 3 DEGREES AND ACTUAL CLASSROOM EXPERIENCE GET NOTHING-- oh yes we get Charlotte Danielson and our futures tied to State- mandated tests- and told we are part of the problem-- when we even question this- a student is a totality of experience and we are being persecuted for the 1 year we have them in our classroom- yes we all want to see our students succeed Matt so don't throw this tired comment out again -you are a reductionist thinker!

Move on said...

Matt, everyone should put down the old board they are the ones that created your $40,000 raise. You are now responsible as a Community Relations person your creating the bad PR for teachers. Pack up your typewriter and move on.

The latest with our union is Adam the fink Harding was spotted signing up the Navy ROTC instructors. Rumor is Thruckenbrock was telling everyone under his new title Glotzbach and himself would be enforcing evaluations with Principals, class room monitoring and teach goal setting. What a joke! They need to start with administration!

Meanwhile back to Harding, ROTC need to join because Glotz/Thrunken are enforcing Danielson with them. They do not have a district contract but the district is responsible for evaluation. Harding has some nerve after selling us out to administration. We have told ROTC not waste their money on union dues but they are being bullied by administration. This does show teachers if they are bullying ROTC we are next. Lets send the union another no confidence vote!

Mr Padron, stop posting about yourself nobody thinks you have done a good job. Ms Thomas is a professional stop attacking her.
What is wrong with you! Your attacks on d131 employees and board members is beyond creepy. Let's review that list starting with your retaliation three years ago. Let's name a few victims Roberts, Johnson, Augustine, Glotzbach, Popp, Hull, Darby, Arroyo, Hanley, Tyler Cantori , Thruckenbrog, Rana, Weiler and Ellington. You have called and harassed administration, teachers, companies and community members many have reported messages left. Then there is the cost of your FOIA requests. These requests have cost the district over $100,000. You are also interfering in union negotiations. This hurts the children of 131.

As for your big news that comes in every email. Mr Feltes was properly dealt with, and is gone. In the real world, one that you do not live in every organization has a bad employee. The professional of 131 have taken proper action.

All of the fore mentioned people, are not crooks, nor have they done anything more than hold a position that Padron dreams up lies, and attacks their character. God help anyone of these people who attempts to defend themselves. Does anyone not think this is sick? You have stated your nickname is the " Mexican Robinhood". Why don't you answer the question who did you work for so we can investigate your creditials for making such accusations. Let us also not forget Mr Padron does not live in our community, in fact he lives in a house his wife has paid for. See we check on you also. More to come Ralph!

Just call me NOBODY said...

"...nobody thinks you have done a good job..." Well then you can call a lot of people in D131 who appreciate Mr. Padron's whistleblowing "nobody"!

Mr. Padron's FOIA requests have cost us "over $100,000"?? How did you come up with that number, did you just pick a big amount and assume "nobody" would challenge it? I would be surprised if the district spent a tenth of that amount on time looking up & printing FOIA requests. And that's a drop in the bucket compared to the +$110,000 spent just on consultants.

And "he lives in a house his wife has paid for"...what planet do you live on, where a husband and wife don't pool their resources and purchase a house? In a successful marriage (and I would know, having been in one for +35 years), both spouses contribute whatever they have (money, time, energy) for the common good of the family. It does not matter which spouse signs the checks on the mortgage payments, who pays the real-estate tax bill, who pays for maintenance & repairs. They BOTH pay for the house!

My family member was bullied on almost a daily basis by Mr. Feltes. Just one example was Feltes turning off the heat in the maintenance building during the coldest days of winter while HE sat in the warmth of his office. If the only thing Ralph Padron exposed in D131 was Feltes' wrongdoing, Mr. Padron would still have my eternal gratitude!

The Mexican Robinhood as he calls himself did not rid the district of anything, the administration and board did. It was Ms Johnson who exposed Feltes early on and although Mr Hull may have not often times agreed with Ms Johnson, they teamed up along with Dr Popp and Ms Tyler. Dr Popp had other issues to address along with Ms Tyler. Somethings take time everyone they is not sitting around living off their wife like Mr Padron lived off the free insurance to drop everything they are doing and address Feltes. Feltes was terminated like Mr Padrons good friend Mr Finley for poor work.

Mr Padron if you continue to verbally attack the character of good folks those words will come back to haunt you. God forgives mistakes nobody is prefect. Even you Ralph!

Vote NO said...

WHY we need to vote no

Our union decided to keep everything status quo and not allow any other members on the negoicating team. They also asked that they continue to use the same administration team which includes using the same lawyer.

Spread the word WE DO NOT TRUST YOU SARA and CARLA vote NO. This team gave us the last contract.

why pay dues said...

Our union is in bed with the administration. Sarah does not have to teach so she does not have a clue about the level of bunk teachers take from administration. Sarah took care of Sarah by making a back room deal about full release. We know about your conversations with Glotzbach and Popp. Carla went along. My question why are we paying union dues?

Get lost said...

Reject this contact and this team; When we get back to school and this is brought up for a vote continue to vote it down. I have been doing research and we as a group need to ask for arbitration from our union. That is what we pay dues for. What the brain trust is not telling us is if we ask for a living wage like other districts it will be granted. We need to ask for 6% across the board. The arbitrator will grant it. They check if the district can pay it and how we stack up to other districts. Our cash reserves in a recent report are 93 million. Time for teachers to stand up. Let's sent Carla and Sara packing. Let's also insist out salary schedule is put back. Sara, Carla, Popp, Thruckenbrog and Glotzbach talked in the back room and took this away from us so we don't know how badly they screwed us.

Carla you are a disappointment who is paying for all your lavish vacations. WE ARE and then you sell us out. If the district can pay Hanley $40,000 why not us. Carla do you realize many of us have a masters and have worked for more than ten years and only make $52,000. Is this fair.

Bravo said...

Good point about the arbitrator and I agree with all that you have said. I just hope it works out that way.

Some nerve said...

Matt Hanley was a slap in the face and Intherm should have publically talked up for members. It shows Popp will put himself first before students and teachers. What has Hanley accomplished to deserve such a raise? The staff feels his only job is to make Popp look good. The latest Matt fiasco is a email to staff ( as if we don't have enough to do) to think up PR messages and update school logos. Is that not his job?

Study other districts said...

Waukegan had a similar situation and their teachers who are not as underpaid as we are made out better. It takes control away from crooked administration and gives power back to the teachers. In our case we need to take back room deals away from our union. We hav a great case showing our administration is paid better than most. In fact Handley makes more than any community relations position in the Tri county. This is while teachers are the lowest paid.

if Popp puts himself ahead of us we need to unite.

In the latest chapter of d131 board members finally put the ever corupt crony Architect Cordogan and Clark out to bid. Leonard defended Cordogan. Could it be Feltes is promised a job. Leonard then proceeded to put hard working maintenance employees under the school bus by demanding snow plowing get taken away from us and put out to bid. One has to wonder does Leonard have a friend in the snow plow business? The good part is Laesch and Darby put him in his place and the others went along with them.

PART 1

NOW WE KNOW WHY HANLEY RECEIVED HIS $40,000.00 RAISE AND PROMOTION

From: Matthew Hanley
Sent: Thursday, January 15, 2015 11:53 PM
To: Michael A Popp
Subject: Good stuff

Dr. Popp:
Good to see you at the alumni meeting. I know you always have a full plate, but it means a lot that the committee can see you in the building, working late after hours. I see that often, but I don't know how many other people realize the time you put in.

After thinking more about our conversation, I wanted to share something that happened today: I ran into a principal this afternoon in the lobby. We were talking about first semester and, unprompted, he started talking about what a difference you've made since you started in the District, less than a year ago. The principal said he often thinks he has a lot going on in his building - which he does - so he can't imagine handling 22 different buildings at once, and the myriad of issues that arise. This principal specifically mentioned how appreciative he was that you took the time to meet with staff and truly listen to their concerns. He said conversations with you are always student centered, always about what's best for kids. This was a spontaneous conversation -1 had approached him about another topic entirely - but his admiration was obvious and genuine. He was excited to work for you.

It reminded me that since April 1:

You started a Citizens Financial Advisory Committee and a Superintendent Student Advisory Committee, engaging two of the most important groups in the school system. Neither of these existed before but you put a priority on hearing ideas from residents and students. That's powerful.

The District started a dropout prevention committee (or graduation expansion committee, whatever was decided) that deals honestly with the biggest challenge facing our District. In a few months, you've begun to address both the short - and long-term issues in a very complicated issue. We've already seen results: Biggest graduating class ever in 2014, then more students in graduating in summer.

Because of your focus on the biggest issue-graduation-this year's class will be
even bigger. More kids will leave East Aurora with a meaningful diploma.

At the same time we have safer schools, with more kids in them. I think at your first meeting with us, you talked about changing the philosophies to keep more kids in class, learning in the ways that best suit their needs. At your directive the District overhauled, and continues to change, its philosophy on discipline and alternative education. Although dire consequences were predicted, there are less fights in school. School is safer and more kids are in class. That's a huge deal.

PART 2

Christi has made major overhauls to the financial systems in the District, making the processes better for the staff and taxpayers. It's been a revelation, frankly. She's always working late and always takes the time to get things right. I met with Elise today and she's impressive. She already gave me some great ideas to improve our bidding process. Despite Facing major obstacles when she started, it's obvious to everyone what a difference Christi has made in just a few months. We're going to save the taxpayers a lot of money, and provide better services to kids.

The District is thinking about problems differently, honestly confronting issues, looking for creative solutions, challenging each other. The staff is excited, administrators are excited. This is after a few months! Imagine over the next few years!
Every day, 15,000 students get a better education than they did the day before.
And the best is ahead, thanks to your leadership and vision.
I know that even after a long day, you were headed over to Waubonsie Valley, where the girls bball team was playing. I heard the Tomcats won the game! Another reminder of the amazing students we're serving every day. I'm sure you have another busy day tomorrow but perhaps we can find some time to brainstorm ideas for the student committee. I don't know how you keep up with it all. If you were tired, hopefully you at least got to 10,000 steps!
Have a great Friday.
Matt

Sounds like a lot of back patting going on said...

Splendid! The vision they seem to have is with blinders on. Hmmmm....I wonder if the principal at the high school may have possibly had ANY thing at all to do with the grad rate. Since he had been working on that his few years there. But I am sure Spencer Byrds few years with those students who were now seniors had nothing to do with it. it was when Popp came in that last year and performed a miracle to make so many more eligible for graduation in their senior year, encouraging them from Central office to work hard and stay in school their final year.
What a bunch of suck up b.s.

Suck up said...

Maybe if Spencer Byrd would have written this type of letter he would still be here. Popp only keeps suck ups around him or people from 204. The talented are leaving d131 in droves. Carspo is totally lost he has not hired for the four Dean of Students opening and the DC is a friend from 204 and was told to hire her. He has NO experience but one year as a AP but then again we just hired Waddle as Asst Sup with no experience. I have a suggestion for the BOE fire the entire central office staff and replace them with AP positions.

Central office news said...

It could be said Matt Hanley is taking up the world of fiction author., It could also be said $40,000 plus is a good royalty of a fiction article.

I work in Central O, and the infighting between the Roberts "leftovers "and the " new" 204 outcasts is bring the district down to a new level. School is right around the corner and over 100 plus positions have yet to get filled, interviewed or processed. Look for the new year to start with no contract, no curriculum, substitutions in record number and finger pointing. Most of this can get put at the door step of Gloztbach. We all know she runs the district. She and her tag along Popp conduct all administrative interviews. Everyone is fed up. If the BOE thinks they moved her out of HR she is still running the show.

It is time for the BOE to step up and ask questions, and not just at meetings. It is clear they showboat for a bunch of racist seniors that got them elected.

Remember BOE who losses the kids. Don't forget you are elected on a school board for the kids.

So what are the saying the BOE is not allowed to terminate Hanley. Why is Joan signing a contract are not all contract with the BOE. It shows Popp is totally corrupt hopefully the teachers will get the same contract but I am sure our weak a** union will sell us out

It also looks like he was given additional benefits . Again. Is Glotzbach allowed to modify a contract without BOE approval.

Very interesting Mr Padron keep it going.

Word on the street is our union would not object to the Hanley raise. Intherm has never publically spoken up for teachers what makes us believe she will do that during negotiations.

We have only ourselves to blame and until Hettinger and Intherm resign our contract will not get better. Look at their attempt to deceive us with the salary schedule Gentil needs to stop complaining and get a petition out for a recall vote on Intherm. Then we can start over.

Maybe we should strike and force Popp to take us serious .

Overpaid Administrators and Underpaid Teachers said...

Why do the community relations people in District 131 make such huge sums of money?

When you see what other district are paying their community relations people, you begin to realize just how overpaid Matt Hanley is. Here is a link to the Morton High School District 201 the community relations position they have posted.

http://www.generalasp.com/dupage/onlineapp/jobpostings/view.asp?district=All&category=Non%2DBargaining

Matt would be making about $15,000 a year there. Take a look for yourselves.

BOE Watcher said...

Hanley is not even a good Community Relations person we never see him at community events or district events. I suppose there is not much the current BOE can do. Hanley is leftovers from the BOE from Hell. Many of the new members have publically stated he will not be with the district when they have the opportunity to renew his contract. Johnson and Leonard already voted against him. If I am Matt I would start looking for a job.

Robbing the District said...

Let's look at the history. Community relations used to be one very small part of what our superintendent did in the course of their duties. If there was any leg work that needed to be done, it would have been delegated to a minimum wage secretary, costing the district the least amount possible.

During the Dr. Radakovich reign, District 131 hired Clayton Muhammad in a political move to appease our former superintendent, Dr. Ponquinette and his political connections. Clayton was Dr. Ponquinette's godson, so he was paid a huge salary that was never earned. What is less clear is why we hired Matt Hanley and later gave him a huge raise and assistants.

As you can see from other area school districts, the press person in most cases is still the superintendent and when the position is hired out, it's an hourly position. Only District 131 is paying a six figure salary for this. Why are the tax payers spending this incredible amount of money for a person to create simple press releases?

I agree said...

Dear Robbing,
I am happy to see someone else recalls the days when PR, CR or whatever was a minor position within the scheme of things in 131. It hasn't improved the education of our students. many times the teachers or who is the focus have to write their own story, basically, to get public acknowledgment. It is a Peter Pan position. They toss the pixie dust so the supt and BOE reputation can fly to higher heights. Just a big tale. They can hire anyone with creative writing skills, for a lot less money.

Our rules differ said...

Mr Hanleys position will get eliminated next year, nobody but Ms Strand is in favor of this outrageous contract. Members of the teachers union have complained and that is the answer we received. I do find it outrageous that Glotzbach signed a agreement to offer Hanley tenure. I was surprised to learn he does have a teaching degree but never used it. Many teachers in 131 face unfair treatment by Principals and teach without evaluations standards in order to achieve tenure. Nice that the rules for him are different. Thanks Ralph for the info.

Disappointed said said...

I have been very disappointed in Strand she is the only board member left from the board from hell. serveral teachers approached her on Hanley and she defended her position by saying her goal was to build a community facilitator. I would like to ask what has he brought to the EA community. She claimed he is involved in community outreach. I have not seen him at any community events whereas West Aurora is well represented. She claimed he spends his days working on Ralph Padron. I have been told he orders the secretaries around to pull FOIA requests. It is sad that his position would pay for three teachers. A benefit to our children. Strand claims he is very ethical. I would like to ask anyone taking money and doing nothing is that ethical. I hope the board follows through on terminating him next year. As for Ms Strand she is a disappointment to teachers .

This earlier comment is worded perfectly:

"When principals at the middle school tell their entire staff if you want to look at other places to work, then we don't need you, the rest of the staff feels dejected. When the cycle continues for years unchecked, the staff leaves."

Sad to see said...

When our district cares more about overpaying a CR director than helping teachers get the tools to teach it shows today's environment. Does anyone know who is the new Director of Elementary. The rumor is it is Joan Glotzbach..This women is a major screw up and has been responsible for Principals turning in poorly written evaluations. The CBU has not been followed and if true she is in charge of education. What was the board thinking by letting this get through. Glotzbach allowed personnel emotions to get involved. can anyone not see she is distroying d131.

Then the Waddle hiring is puzzling. Would any of our APs get promoted to Asst Sup. Congradulations to Mr Brusek for getting out of this maddness . Many of us our left wondering were is the district headed.

Hard to be Optimistic said...

The fact that Glotzbach's position is a mystery says a lot. And this with a Communications Director--what a joke. Where's the press release on that or Truckenbrod's new position? Or how about Childress taking over technology? How is she qualified for that? An AP becoming Assistant Sup is beyond comprehension. This district lacks even basic transparency and ethics.

Of course David Brusak left, like David Negron before him. Good people come to this district but get pushed out. Notice Glotzbach and Childress keep standing despite years of mismanagement and poor results.

Our union leadership is a joke. We definitely need to push for moderation. We can't do worse than Imthurn. Feeling sick about next year and it hasn't even started.

It is so sad to see that nothing has changed in District 131. It is always the same rhetoric of "improving", "moving forward", "careful fiscal spending" and "for the well being of the children" when the same kind of cronyism has ceased to exist. I left the district many years ago and while I miss a lot the students and faculty I had the opportunity to work with; it is a shame that administrators continue to do such a disservice to the East Aurora community.

TOOOOOO bad for EA said...

How long is the BOE going to tolerate Popp. Glotzbach is a joke, she has not been seen and Principals are not sure who is in charge. Then we had the AP musical chair game again. It seems every year we move everyone around. It builds no continuity with students, parents or teachers.

Then the entire Curriculum department is a joke. They openly bad month each other leaving teachers to just shake their heads. Most of us have vested careers here and our trapped. If only I had it to do over again.

Strand is not the only one left over from the Board from Hell. Let's not forget about Leonard who even today is trying to stick it to the maintenance department because his friend Marty Feltes was fired. Here is the kicker- it is obvious he cares nothing for the children but was always talking about his taxes going up, which on the surface looks like a noble cause. But, then we see why he is actually there- he pushed to have his buddy Marty Feltes hired despite the fact that he did not hold the required degree nor met the specified job requirements for the position of Director of Buildings & Grounds. Leonard exclained that Feltes had a "life skills" degree thus persuading the BOE to change the requirements of this very important position so suit Feltes and then hiring him. As we all know, this resulted in a gross mismanagement of funds which in turn contributed to taxes being raised (among other things). He is not there for the kids and he is not there for taxes. Then why is he still on the Board? Well, since Leonard and Feltes are seen regularly driving through the district and out and about at various restaurants and clubs around town together, I'd say the reason is pretty obvious!

Reality is Mark Thruckenbrod is Popps fishing buddy they are always on vacations together. They recently returned from a fishing trip in Canada and thus more cronyism. Mark brought his wife over from 204 and now Waddle his AP. Scott Dart is also a family friend. They are all making more than teachers and administratio that have worked for the district for years. Who would promote a AP to Asst Sup. Why is the board allowing this. The cronyism is a running rampage.

Many qualified administrators are leaving EA and teachers beware Truckenbrod, Gloztbach and Waddle will all review you out if you speak.

Our only hope is the BOE from Hell is gone.

Sorry to see a tradition come to the end. Graduation at NIU. It's show the 204 way has taken over the district. I loved to see the kids all dressed up walking with their parents to graduation. It was a community treasure.

I loved being able to walk a couple of blocks to EAHS graduation, but the numbers are much different now. Our high school is bursting at the seams with students, and the fact is that if bad weather had forced the ceremony inside this year, our students would have been able to invite only TWO guests apiece to see them graduate. We were fortunate with weather this year, and there was enough room on the football field for the traditional ceremony. But what about next year? Projected enrollment (and graduation numbers) is considerably higher. I'm glad our district is forward-thinking enough to provide a better alternative. We need to adjust our traditions when necessary!

Here's the info said...

For some reason, the d131music.org site has been taken down. No information on the EAHS bands, choirs, Tri-M, Band Boosters, or faculty is currently available.

So here's the information I was referring to:

Joe Kulick (recent Kansas State graduate, percussionist, and former member of Cavaliers Drum & Bugle Corps) is the new assistant band director at EAHS. Here's his Facebook page:

https://www.facebook.com/jkulick11?fref=ts

James Stellmacher (who was the EAHS choir director for two years before moving back to Wisconsin just before school started in 2012) is back as the EAHS choir director.

Too bad this information isn't available on the "official" website...good thing we have the blog as a plan B!

You guys need to do more than blog. The website works fine.

Same old politics said...

In reading today's article it shows Laesch and Arroyo's need to get news coverage. It also shows with much larger issues looming they are focused on their agenda ( a political office) not what is best for students. The new board is a joke and they are not keeping promises. Both promised staff a 4% raise and nothing has happened, that is the comments I would like to see in the newspaper gentleman.

The d131music website was down this morning for a couple of hours, but is now working.

Thanks to this blog, for providing the requested information while the website was unavailable.

Thanks to this blog for providing nothing.

Interesting use of the word "nothing" said...

I was unable to access the d131music site around 11:00 this morning. I then went to the district website, which had NO mention of the new EAHS band or choir director. Then I came back to this blog and found the information I was looking for.

You may consider this information "nothing", but some of us appreciate being informed. And in this particular instance, this blog DID provide it when two supposedly official sources were lacking.

Let's hear it for Plan B! said...

As of 5:15 p.m., the d131music.org website is down AGAIN...

...but this blog has information about the new assistant band director, and returning former choir director at East High.
